I have a Sears Craftsman LT4000 (quite old; grey boxy hood);
Model 917.255581; serial 061192S. It won"t go into gear!
at first it was hard to move the shifter, but it would still go into
gear. Now I can move the shifter; it"s still hard; but it won"t go
into gear or move any more. No noise, or anything...

Is it toast, or is it fixable?

Any help appreciated, Jim.

Yes it's belt drive...

I had quickly checked the belt when it happened,
and it seemed fine. But when I checked yesterday
the belt had slipped off the engine pulley. Immediate
mystery solved!!! I'd still like to know why the shifter on
the left fender is so hard to move. It doesn't seem to matter
if you move the shifter sideways or not; the plastic cover
is gone....

Another question. There are two wires that go to my carb;
one on the bottom which is a fuel shutoff valve, which I need
to test; which I gather is pretty expensive. What's the other wire for?
A 'mechanic' had disconnected the wire to the fuel shutoff, and
added a valve to the fuel line, which needs to be turned when the
tractor isn't being used. What terminal on the key switch should
this be tied to?

Thanks, Jim.
