I have had my eye on a 1995 Hitachi ex70 that is for sale near my house for months now. I am new the world of excavators. Can anyone suggest some makes/models of 12-18k lbs excavators to look at ? Like most my main focus is getting a lower hour well built machine that has a good reputation. I have read good things about the hitachi stuff. I would like to find a machine for 10-20k with steel tracks. The land is rocky where I live and i can't see rubber holding up as well.

Thanks

Since the Hitachi is local I would check it out. What are they asking for it?
Is this for your own personal use?

I'd be more apt to get a higher hr machine with a good uc over a lower hr machine that needs a bunch of work or uc. Uc can run you 10k if it needs rebuilt. It's also sometimes more cost effective to find a larger 15-20 ton machine due to the higher cost for transport. If your just wanting it for your place and won't be moving it around that might be a good option. Sell it when your done and recoup your money

Brett makes a good point about older used equipment. If the last owner or two did some major rebuilding but did not 'use up' a lot the rebuild for personal use the machine might last a long time. Going with an over sized machine for personal use may mean with lower demands even a machine with a lot of hours will still be an option to consider.

Under carriage and drive line condition would be my main concern. Hoses, bucket repair, servicing are to be expected.

The old 1983 JD 310B backhoe we got in 2010 had a lot of pin wear but by keeping it greased the slop is no worse today the best I can tell. I do NOT loan or hire it out. If it breaks it can set where it breaks for as long as needed. :)

PC75UU@ has been good machine, but very $$ and cramped to work on.
