I have an 1872 and need a new seat. Went and bought a replacement(made by MTD) and it says "it fits CC lawn tractors".
Uh...........not this one!
Any ideas? One from CC runs $99!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Right now I plan to use the one I bought and make an "adapter" for it to fit unless I hear otherwise from you good people about replacement seats that would fit.

Did you check TSC? They carry several types of seats. I lucked out with my 1450 and found a seat cover at a close-out store for $10.00. It fit over the old seat perfectly and was still on it when I traded it in.

I used the seat I got at Lowes. It's an Arnold seat made by MTD. The stock seat has a bolt pattern of 8X11. 8 front to back and 11 side to side. This seat has the more standard 5X6 pattern.
I fastened the seat to a piece of plywood and fastened the plywood to the seat bracket. Works fine.

I searched for atleast 1/2 hour last night online and turned up nothing for that bolt pattern. I DID find and 8X11 pattern but it was the opposite of what mine is.

Good idea. Finding an exact match seat pan mount is difficult to say the least. You did the most cost effective thing!

This is the correct factory seat for the 1872 and many of the older Cubs with the 8 x 11 bolt pattern as Diesel Nut describes, 8 FB 11 Side-Side. I just put one on my 682 and measured it to be sure. Pricey, but factory real. Wright's is a good place to deal with for hard to find parts.

Thanks. I saved them to my favorites. The Arnold seat was less than half the cost. I was still satisfied with the quality. It wass better than what I thought was coming out of the box. But if I were wanting to keep the Cub original the one you gave me a link for would be my choice. I guess my dealer was giving me a "deal" at $99.00 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I've made up my mind to keep this tractor as long as I can. The fast speed with cutting, the size, the size of the deck, the power steering and hydraulic deck would be hard to replace with a new unit.
I'm now trying to take measures to cutting down on vibration on the unit. Replacing lost nuts and bots to the covers. Putting on rubber molding here and there. Maybe a new, modern steering wheel with some padding also.
After looking at $$ of new ones I have come to like "This Old Tractor".

Yep, the 1872 is definitely one to refurbish and hang on to forever if you can, it is an awesome garden tractor, and like my 682 predecesor to it, you will NEVER see L/G tractors made that way again. It is nearly impossible to get all the little rattles out of the hood and side covers on the fully shielded models, but don't sweat it- hey, at least they are made out of that old magical stuff called METAL /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I swear kids 10 years from now will only be able to see metal in museums- or on our old Cubs!

All it takes is reading about people buying these new models for $2000+ and they won't mow up 25 degree inclines and have cheaped out lesser-hour engines than the commercial grades the manufacturers used to supply to Cub to have an even greater appreciation for the old machines that were built to perform and last. Now it seems the motto is how flimsy can we build it and actually get away with it /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You know, plastic hoods and such don't bother me. What bothers me is engines with no torque. Sure they can claim 27hp. But where are the torque ratings. My 1872 has a "little" 18 hp Kohler but I bet is has twice the torque of these new engines. This thing will cut grass 2 ft high. Been there, done that.
What also bothers me is the cutting speed. The new ones go a whopping 5.3 mph. **** I can push my Toro push mower that fast! I'd love to know how fast this 1872 goes. I bet it's top speed is 12-15mph. It goes so fast sometimes it scares me........and I race dirt bikes thru the woods /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif .
I guess I'm glad I have it now. I was wondering a bit last week.

I did some extensive research when looking at replacement engines for my old tired KT17, and the engine manufacturers do rate their engine power honestly, and supply the torque figures on their web sites. I'm not sure why there is this HP race for the small lawn tractors?? Those new Cub 1000 and 1500's are trying to put their 27 HP and 45 Ft/lbs of torque through a belt drive system- no wonder they don't want to work! If I remember correctly your Magnum 18 has a torque of 29 ft/lbs- much less than the 27 HP engine, but guess what? The 1872 can get its power to the ground with no problems at all! Incidentally the Kohler Courage 27 and your Magnum 18 have about the same 750cc of cylinder displacement. The higher power is made with overhead valves and a higher compression ratio.

As far as the top speeds that probably came down to a liability issue somewhere along the line- yes, my 682 will easily go 8 to 10 MPH- not that I'd ever mow that fast but it is fun to put the cart on and give my nephew a ride down the road! I can see some kiddie jumping on a tractor that goes that fast and hitting a tree and the parents suing the tractor manufaturer- it probably came down to that making approx 5 MPH the top speed now.

The 1872 SGT is quickly starting to become a collector item, so I'd fix 'er up and hang on to her. Like I said, you'll never see anything like them again.
