In attempting to rate the different insulation types- who has an idea what the 'typical' metal building insulation was in the early nineties? This is yellow batting, 3 inch, has a white vinyl backer that faces the interior, and like today, comes in long and wide rolls. We're attempting to find out what the relative "R" rating was for this type.

I've heard numbers from 6 to 10. My guess is 6 is closer to accurate.

4 inches of pink insulation that were used for walls in the 70s was R12, if its 3 inch it would be about R9.

If I recall correctly, 4"=R8 and 6"=R12.
I'd bet in steel building with the vinyl bagging it was R4 at best.
The main aspect was that the vinyl 'bagging' prevented sweating being an excellent vapor barrier.
Steel buildings will sweat from humidity and their goal was to prevent that at a minimum cost. Hence bagged 3" of insulation.
Adequately efficient for a storage or minimal usage building but not so for a dwelling.
