OLM'S on new vehicles

I can assume like everybody else and figure you have a GM vehicle and repeat the answers or let you know that if you have a GM read the answers and remind you that when the oil is changed you will need to reset the OLM (directions are in the owners manual) If you can't find it let me know and I will see if I can find the directions for your vehicle. You should also know the vehicle has no idea what type of oil you use, it assumes that you used the minimum grade of oil that is specified in the owners manual.

If you have a non-GM vehicle then the light is an oil change reminder light that comes on at a predetermined interval based on ????, but still needs to be reset whenever the oil is changed.

I would have thought you only need to reset the light after it had come on. With this in mind , it tells me that the system must only keep up with hours & or mileage that was on the vehicle . The 1 st oil change was when the OLM came on It was reset at that time The 2 nd. oli change was performed b- 4 the OLM notified me so I didn't reset it. I had no idea you had to reset the OLM if it wasn't on . No big deal to reset . Just depress the gas 3 times Thanks DP I will read this info when I get time

Check the links that dieselpower posted. (I have not looked at them for a while.) Basically GM's OLM looks at a few basic items: Engine / Oil Capacity, Grade (gl spec) / type of Oil at time of production, temperature - engine and ambient, rpm(combustion events), and time. (keeping it simple.) Based on that information a computer program starts a continual countdown from 100 to somewhere between 10-0 percent when it will let you know it is time to change the oil. It is expected that you change the oil within 600 miles of the light coming on or 1yr with no light coming on or 3000 miles if you accidently reset the system.
