Hot cars, asphalt can destroy skin during summer swelter - Arizona's Family

While the air temperature was below 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the thermometer recorded a temperature of 122 on a patch of green grass. Black asphalt was 138 degrees. A nearby rock path was 133. The pavement was 131. A wood dock reached a temperature of 164.


Turning to cars, light colored leather seats showed a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit, with a seat belt at 130. Both the dashboard and the actual painted steel body of a dark colored sedan sat at temperatures just above 170. All of the mentioned surfaces were exposed to direct sunlight.

I live in Northern NY(right on the Canadian border);I had a neighbor family moved to Phoenix a couple years ago;what a difference in climate!I'll take the four seasons anytime.

But it's a dry heat...

I went to college in Phoenix in late 70s, early 80s, drove a car with no AC and vinyl seats. I worked full time and went to school full time, I did not have time to worry about how hot the seat was (it was very hot at times) or how driving with the windows open (and arm hanging out) gives you and dark tan on left arm...

No thank you. I don't even envy the guys laying pavement in this state, when temps get up to 80.
In another discussion about heat vs cold it's been pointed out that we can put another layer on, but you can only take so much off.

I miss Arizona, my natal state...but, after many years in much colder places, I bet it would take a while to readjust to the climate if I went back there.
