I would change the filter again at 50 hours and cut it open for investigation.

I would also cut open the filter you just took off.

I am quite sure that oil first passes through the center of the filter and then goes through the element to it's destination, is that correct ? The reason I ask is that there were a couple specks of metal ( very very tiny ) when I dumped the oil that was left in the filter into a clean container on the 50 hr. hst filter change .There was also a light grey sediment in the bottom of the white container I put the oil in . I havn't run the tractor and considering changing the hyd. fluid due to this sediment that settled in the bottom of the container what do you guys think ? I ordered the hyd. filter from Messicks today if i decide to do the complete change . I can understand a couple tiny metal flakes but the grey sediment is what concerns me , is all the fluid like this or just what was trapped in the filter ?

When I did my 50hr on my BX, there was quite a bit of sediment on the screen and some in the filter...I changed the HST fluid at that time and the fluid was clear with minimal sediment in the pan....Changed it all again at 100 and no traces of anything.

.

I have new filters on order and have the hyd. fluid so I'm thinking right now I will run it for another 50 hrs. and change everything .

Thanks Chris for your input . What is the best way to cut open a filter without puting more filings in the filter ?

Haven't looked into other places but Caterpillar has a filter cutter that works similar to a tubing cutter - sharp edged wheel that will cut through the filter in several rotations. Cat always recommends cutting filters and stretching out the filter media to check for debris. The Cat part number is 175-7546. I am sure they can be found other places.

CAT part is $113.61
eBay lists some for $32.
Amazon lists one for $55.

I have a large pipe cutter I have used for years. They also make a purpose built filter cutter. Any good mechanic should have one and would probably open it up for you.

In a pinch at the lake I cut open one with a cold chisel about 1/2" up from the base.

Thanks Chris ,I will use the chisel method for this time , and thanks for all the other help from others . I shouldn't have been so cheap and just changed everything . The manual says to change fluid at 400 hrs. but when it tells you how to change hst filter it says to drain all the fluid first . Doesn't make much sense to me , do they expect you to put the old fluid back in , crazy .
