It's a poor design (similar to my 0542 cutter) and a PITA to replace shear bolts thru that plastic access door on top........shame on Land Pride for "designing stoopid"

I agree, our howse mower also has the same shield. What I hated most about the shield was it was in the way when I would grease the ujoints.

Trying to loosen slipclutch nuts and adjust the slipclutch is an even bigger PITA. I've had it with mine. I'm going to rip it off. I'll replace it with a home made metal shield when I finally get a shop with a welder and cutting torch.

I think most of these gear boxes are Comer brand. Someone could start a cottage industry making aftermarket replacement gearbox shields.

It obviously is a cheaper way to do things rather than a metal shroud like BH use to use , not sure about now .Mine is coming off at any rate , as soon as I get a chance to do it .

I don't advise others to do this but I am away from pets , house , other people and ONLY cut hay and tall grass , so I took off the front and rear shields and what a difference that made in it's cutting ability . Before i did this it would leave big areas of uncut material even in the center section where the tires never ran over it .

I think they are talking about the huge plastic sheild on the PTO shaft that protects folks clothes from getting caught in the spinning shaft. I hear you on the shields on a bush hog. It's like gaining 5 HP at the PTO.

Yes, we are talking about the PTO shield at the gearbox, which makes adjusting the slipclutch or replacing shear pins a gigantic PITA.

I would not remove my debris shields on the front or rear of the mower. Especially the front one, which protects your noggin' (or rear cab window if you have a cab) from debris shooting out. But if someone is only cutting hay and grass and knows there are no hidden surprises laying out there, I could see someone being willing to take the risk.

A buddy of mine just replaced his 3rd rear window in his cab because of debris from his batwing mower hitting it. He's a slow learner but swears this time he's going to build an expanded metal shield to cover the rear cab window. It would be easier to put the chain guards back on the mower. But, like I said, he's a slow learner.
