Took my 11-year old grandson to Windrock for one day, in conjunction with my annual family reunion in Tennessee. We rode a little over 43 miles on the moderate trails and gravel roads. I stayed off the difficult trails because we were riding alone, and there weren't that many people on the mountain on a Thursday. I counted only 4 trailers in the huge parking area near the snack bar. Here's a slideshow of a few pics taken on the smoother portions where I felt comfortable holding a camera and driving...

Going from memory, and not the map, I think we did Trail 1, 2, 18, 16, 34, 13 and a couple others. We had a great time!

If you've never heard of Windrock, here's the website for it:

windrock

Not as large as Hatfield & McCoy in WV, but at 72,000 acres and 330 miles of trails, it's nothing to sneeze at...

windrock is a great place to ride! another good place close to windrock is royal blue. we spent 3 days riding there last summer and plan to go back this fall. royal blue rangers will guide you for free if you let them know when you will be riding.

Windrock is an hour closer to "home" than RoyalBlue or Brimstone -- that is one of the major reasons I chose to go there. Windrock is about an hour away, while RoyalBlue, Brimstone and Tellico are all about 2 to 2.5 hours away...

Plus, I was riding alone, and Windrock typically has more riders on it, I understand...

I didn't want to take the chance of getting stuck 40 miles from nowhere, all by myself...

Your post caught my attention as we can see Windrock from our farm in Oakdale, TN.
Sounds like you had a very nice outing with your grandson.

It was a great time for both of us. It was only the 2nd day since a good rain, and the trails weren't dusty at all. You could kick up just a little dust on the gravel roads, but none on the trails. There was some mud, but we could avoid most of the mudholes -- I don't enjoy playing in it just for the sake of playing...

Both of us would've liked to spend another two days or so...
