One horse power wood splitter

Yes i know what you mean, and can also provide the answer... There is an electrical motor hidden underneath, overcoming the friction of the slatted conveyor on which the horse walks, and driving the splitter too...

What's the point?

Interesting......
Wonder where this is located ???
That appears to be a modern, newer model DR brand mechanical splitter.... Not a cheap item as it is...
I am more interested in the details of what makes it more useful to spend the time and money to convert it
to run on animal power than a gas motor.... ???

KnowwhatImean....

Some people that keep a team for certain jobs like to go to great lengths to find other things to use the horses for in order to keep them exercised and in shape all year round. I once talked to a guy that lived off grid and had a team or two for farming his land, he had a generator setup that he would hook up a team in the winter and charge up his battery bank while giving the horses some excercise in the off season. It resembled the old style circular track with a gearbox in the centre that drove a pto.

these treadmill units have been around for many years. this is a modern version. ive seen them demonstrated at fairs in the past. The hoirse walks cause its sloped.

ive seen these things hooked up to small lumber mills, washing machines, bale elevators, stuff like that. The Amish love them

I don't work with horses, but my guess would be that the horse is walking because that's it's job. They take commands and do their work, if they're trained well. Wouldn't that be nice for hauling sap out of the woods, or hay bales out of the field. A tractor that moves forward when you tell it to. And stops too.

I thought that was what a wife was for:laughing:

and 100 watts can turn on quite a few of todays led technology bulbs compared to 100 watts in an old incandescent. and your right the generator would have too be made for the application to match the speed torque produced from the bike/treadmill used not just grab the old alternator oout of the ford outback and rap a belt around it!

Too much friction loss in a treadmill setup. You want a giant wheel, like a Ferris wheel. Best to have a row of them all connected to a common generator shaft. :D

There is a US version built here by the name of Athens. Single horse unit looks to run $6100.00, w/free delivery from the one vendor in VT. within 200 miles Radius.
