Backhoe One more backhoe question....

New DK45SE w/cab and 2485 backhoe.

I have already had cases where the boom has had trouble lifting the loaded bucket (red clay gravel) from a 5-6 ft deep hole. Fluids are fine. Running engine at 1800-1900 rpm. Is this normal or should I expect more power than this?

Also, should it be powerful enough to reposition the tractor, i.e. lift the rear and swing it to one side or the other?

I am a new operator admittedly but I was expecting more power than this.

Maybe more rpm?

I don't know about yours, but the bh on my ck30 is the strongest thing on my tractor. Lift the front end off the ground or the rear end..

And a 24" bucket full of clay is no problem..

Would be great if you could post a video on youtube or something, I'm always anxious to see video of people's described problems.

Your hoe should be able to lift the back of your machine with little effort. Your hoe should be able to pick up the better part of 1000lbs with little effort.

A full bucket of dirt should move the same as an empty bucket of dirt. You should be able to easily pick up rocks 2-3 times or more the size of your backhoe bucket (assuming you are not running a 36 inch bucket).

Sounds like a problem.

Is your loader strong? Can it lift the front of your machine? First thought is always pump, even if valving is limiting flow, power should still be there. Maybe your hoe's valve body's pressure relief is set incorrectly or something has it stuck open and oil is being diverted.

If new machine just call dealer and let them sort out.

I have the same unit and tractor - almost.
I dug a test hole 4'x4'x5' deep in heavy clay no problem.
I tend to run a little higher on the rpms - around 2000-2100.
I haven't used the unit much - but when taking it off had no problem
lifting rear of tractor - by accident.

Look for crimped or damaged lines. Hoses are tight...

Lifting the tractor off the ground to reposition it is very dangerous and would not recommend doing this.

As I think about it, I don't think it lifts the front off the ground as I dig.

Stout hoe, but a bit of a bucking bronco..

For the record I agree with Rick on the repositioning with the hoe, I think it also probably does a number on the bushings.

It's an 18" bucket. Thanks for the warning on the reposition question. I'll avoid doing that.

This problem with the lifting seems intermittent. I'll keep an eye on it and see if I can get more specifics. And I'll try a video as well if I can figure out how to do that. Bottom line is it just doesn't seem as strong as I thought it would be.

You are correct, it should not have any trouble at all lifting a bucket of clay from 6ft down. An 18 inch bucket of clay cannot weigh much more than 300-400lbs and that BH should be able to easily lift that. Something ain't right. I rather doubt that the RPMs are the issue either.

Thanks again. I'll have it checked out.

Also, yesterday I started greasing it and the third zerk I added grease to broke. The nipple just broke at the base without any pressure on it. No big deal, except I went to NAPA and O'Reily's and neither had one with the correct thread. Are these odd-ball zerks?
