Terry Jones, Monty Python Co-Founder and Comedy Polymath, Dead at 77
Rolling Stone|19 hours ago
Terry Jones, one of the core members of Monty Python and director of three of the comedy troupe's films, died Tuesday after a battle with a rare form of dementia, FTD, the BBC reports. Jones' agent confirmed his death, while his family also issued a statement. 展e have all lost a kind, funny, warm, creative, and truly loving man whose uncompromising individuality, relentless intellect, and extraordinary humor has given pleasure to countless millions across six decades, they said. 滴is work with Monty Python, his books, films, television programs, poems, and other work will live on forever, a fitting legacy to a true polymath.

"Jones frequent writing partner, Michael Palin, said, 滴e was far more than one of the funniest writer-performers of his generation, he was the complete Renaissance comedian writer, director, presenter, historian, brilliant children痴 author, and the warmest, most wonderful company you could wish to have.

"Jones helped launch Monty Python in 1969, working as a writer and actor on their breakout sketch show, Monty Python痴 Flying Circus. He also played a crucial role in the development of its stream-of-consciousness style, where classic sketch tenets and structures were dropped in favor of irreverent beats and random endings. Jones would go on to co-direct with Terry Gilliam one of Python痴 first movies, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and later helmed Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life. Along with his comedy career, Jones moonlighted as a medieval historian, political pundit, and children痴 book author.

Jones was born in Wales in 1942 but was raised in England. He studied English literature at Oxford, which is where he met Palin while performing in the Oxford Revue. The pair formed a partnership and, after graduating, ventured out into the television-comedy world together. They spent the mid-Sixties working on a variety of shows, such as David Frost痴 The Frost Report and the sketch show Do Not Adjust Your Set. It was during this time that Jones and Palin linked up with the rest of the Pythons, formed the group and, in 1969, debuted Flying Circus."

""Terry was first of all an enormous enthusiast," [Michael Palin] told the BBC.

"He threw himself into things with such passion and such energy, and he really refused to take on things which didn't excite him and which didn't feel different from what else was around.

"Part of his warmth was his love of all sorts of things and comedies - he knew an awful lot about the silent film comedians. There were so many aspects to Terry, but I would say enthusiasm and passion were the two main words that described him best.

"We had some very strange and silly moments together over the years. He was a very keen cook and I remember one time he was shucking oysters at his home. He loved entertaining people, he was the most marvellous entertainer, but unfortunately he nearly cut his finger off. Blood was spurting out of his finger and we were sent down to the nearest hospital.

"Terry had to keep his finger above his head so we entered the hospital, myself and Terry, with his hand up in the air like he was permanently asking for permission to do something. As we walked through casualty everybody laughed, it was wonderful. They couldn't believe the Pythons had visited them in this miserable place.

"I loved writing with Terry because he was very creative. He had some wonderful ideas for characters, he was very funny, he was very good at plot. That was something I was less good at, and when we did the Ripping Yarns, Terry was the one who was very keen to give each story a meaning and a significance."

I probably will have to give up my Mancard for saying this but I have never watched a Monty Python movie. Yet I have heard many tidbits and they certainly have made an impact in the verbal expressions we use.
This is one that I’m quite familiar with...

FWIW; if anyone has a scientific bent, you might consider watching "The Syphilis Enigma". It's a long video, referenced in the above video, but very fascinating. It provides evidence that syphilis was endemic in Europe long before Columbus; it is a classic example of how science is supposed to work. It combines Archaeology, Anthropology, Dendrochronology, Carbon dating, etc. to show that syphilis was symptomatic in the bones of Monks and upper class individuals buried in a pre-Columbian monastery.

Hearing about his dementia is so sad, wondered why he seemed to vanish a few years back. He certainly had an impact on how I view the world.
Terry could always make me laugh, and skits like the TV just showing the last few miles of the highway reminds me of the current reality shows!
