Good Evening Folks:

Like the title says, oops, I did it again.

The exhaust system on my mf 65 comes off the manifold and runs under the side of the tractor and out the back. I managed to rip out the exhaust pipe from the muffler back. I have no idea what I caught it on.

I have noticed mf 65's have two ways of venting the exhaust: out the back under the tractor or straight up. Does it make any difference which way it is vented? If the exhaust was originally down and back, can I change it to a straight up without any issues?

My acreage is primarily forest with some pretty rough ground with all the deadfall. Since I now have to replace the exhaust system, I am thinking of doing it straight up rather than down and back. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

It is done all the time. There is no reason you could not change how your exhaust routes. You may trade one problem for another though. Several people have caught a limb with upright exhaust and broken the muffler off. I guess it depends on your uses as to which is better.

The MF 65 is quite the classic. There is no reason you can't change the routing. Many do & I've never heard of a problem. Some tractors even came with an intermediate piece that bolted between the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe that could be turned to allow the exhaust to go in a different direction. But there is no reason why you cannot bend the pipe instead. Try to make smooth bends in your new pipe - you can get pipe bent at a muffler shop - and some hotrod shops have a flexible exhaust pipe for the purpose. A couple of feet of flex pipe can turn a big job into an easy one

If going vertical, consider making the upright in two pieces that slip together at hood height. You can support the lower one rigidly and just slip the upper onto it. Keep the slip connection short and no tighter than needed - that way a limb will only knock off the upper piece.

You should put a flapper on top to keep rain from running down the inside of the pipe. A tin can used for that purpose tends to go missing.
If you start to get condensation build up in the pipe, drill an 1/8" hole at the low point so the condensation can drain. That avoids the diesel slobber splatter when starting.
