Tractor
John Deere 3020
I have a John Deere 3320 (32.5hp). I want to make my own hay this year and am wondering if this tractor will run a round bailer and a haybine. I now the hp is low but will manage if oporated slowly and under control, but will the drawbar be high enough to run it without the pto shaft being pinched by the tounge of the bailer/haybine. Any infrormation or tips will be greatly appreciated.

I believe you will be dealing with towed
implement that will be too heavy for your
drawbar and you will have a very light
front end affecting the stability of the
tractor especially when the baler has
not ejected the bale.

You would be better off buying a
Wolagri Mini baler to make round bales
and small discbine from Ken Sweet.;)

Thats going to depend on the size of the bailing equipment used. you didnt mention specific model numbers of the equipment you want to use.

Generally the only hay equipment sized for that size tractor is really old (70's) or really new and really small.

If round balers is what you want, they do make some small round balers and even mini balers. But, I wouldn't recommend a 4x5 or larger round baler for that size tractor. I have a cousin who bought a big giehl (can't think of the model number now) because he got it at a good price. It is way too large for his New Holland TC45 (I think). (Fortunately, my JD5403 handles it with ease). For meduim to large round bales, you will need at least 60 or more hp. Those haybines aren't no small potatoes either. Even if the land is flat, tall grass will overwork your tractor with a quickness. For a tractor that size stick with a sickle bar or disc mower.

While you have a very nice compact tractor you have to think like your tractor is a modern day 8N Ford. You can run a small drum mower or sicklebar mower. You can run the oldest square balers very slowly but it will jar your teeth out. You can run one of the micro square or micro round balers but they are not much cheaper than a full sized baler. The Chinese micro balers are not yet a mature product with good parts & dealer support.
You can mow, tedd & rake fine with your tractor and let your neighbor bale it for you. If you really want to do hay you need a tractor at least 40 PTO HP and a tractor 4500 Lbs. or more.
