Opinion on 1995 Deere 870

New guy here.


Looking at purchasing a JD 870, 1995. 1100 hours.

Any opinion on this tractor?
Issues or concerns?
Weak points?

Good tractor and nice ones sell quickly. If you like it and it's in good shape, I suggest you move on it.
If I recall correctly, the engine produces 28 or 29 HP and the tractor has 25 PTO HP. Although that sounds quite equivalent to the current 790, the 870 is a more robust machine.

No major issues or concerns particular to this tractor. Make sure the clutch is OK, of course.
No weak points for that size machine.

The current 990 is rerived from the 870-970 series tractors.

What do you intend to use it for?

Check the battery tray. That series of tractor had a problem with battery leakage, though it may not apply to that year and model.

If you like simple, reliable manual controls, you'll love it. How much are they asking, if it's okay to ask? Any attachments / implements?

I owned one for six years, it was a 94 model and had 680 hours when I sold it last year. I used it for brush hogging, mowing my lawn, plowing snow, and FEL work. It was a great tractor with no problems, very reliable and overall an easy keeper. One thing I wished for was a separate pump for the power steering, when using the loader it would steal some of the power needed for the steering.

The owner is asking $9800. It has a FEL. Told it is the larger of the 2 available for that year... 80? Also has filled tires, R1 tread. There is a frame mount plow that could be available as well.

If a plow is frame mount, that means the FEL will have to be removed to use the plow? Not sure I like this. I have a wood stove and would like to use the FEL to move wood from the pile to the house.

Sheetmetal is said to be striaght and clean.

Good buy or pass it by?
