Opinion on broken Kubota; who should pay???

I borrowed a crossbow from a guy a few falls back. It, of course, broke while I was playing with it. So I had it fixed. Manufacture actually had discontinued the model, so they replaced with a new one for about 1/2 price. The fellow was so impressed by my concern that he just up and gave me the thing. Wouldn't think of taking it back. Now I'm not saying that you should hope for the hoe just because you fixed it, but I would say that you can rest assured that your effort will not go unnoticed. He just might return the favor in the near future in some special way. Now wouldn't that be nice. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't understand why you would ask such a question. You say this guy is your buddy. Man, a freind that will let you borrrow his machine is worth more than the price of a brand new hoe. Absolutely, YOU need to pay for it before you tell him what happened.

Pay for the repair and always remember "neither a borrower nor a lender be"

Who should pay, you're kidding, right?
It all depends on whether you want to continue to be friends with the owner, whether you will ever need to borrow anything from him ever again and whether he has anything that belongs to you (maybe). Put yourself in his shoes for a minute, he lends out a machine and it comes back broken. He can turn the other cheek but we're not fighting the Romans here. In the long run a few bucks is little compared to the value of friendship. That said, if you truly don't have a few bucks and he knows this to be true, then friendship will perservere. Or you could sell your computer.
Suppose neither one of you owned it. Would you break it, leave it broken, and just hand it over to him knowing he was going to use it next?
We are all put here to help each other.
He helped you when you needed it.
Giving it back broken isn't gonna help him much.
Of course you should pay, that is what you should do and it would be fair to get it fixed and then mention that it broke.
Getting it fixed is the right thing to do, period.
One of the TBN posters said it best... life is tough, first you get the lesson, then you learn.
Cheer up, far worse things could have happened.
Ante up and move on knowing you're a better person who did the proper thing.

Anyone notice the original poster hasn't been back since he posted the question. He has also shows only one post in his profile. Think he didn't like the answers?

I had a pump stuck in a well once and borrowed a home made pump pulling rig from a neighbor. The rig was old pipe and had an old rope and a hand crank winch. Instead of getting the pump out of the well I managed to bend up the pipe on the rig and also broke the rope. I bought all new pipe and fittings, new rope and built a new rig. When I returned it to the neighbor he was shocked and said he wouldn't have expected me to build him a new rig. I told him I didn’t do it because I thought he might expect it, I did it because it is what I expect of myself.

I agree with the previous poster. Never borrow anything that you are not prepared to replace or repair. I don't have a single neighbor that maintains anything as well as I maintain my own things. I had to let relative borrow either, I always say I want to help so I can babysit the tools.
