I致e been looking at buying either a used TLB or a used SS for doing dirt work around my 10 wooded acres in Virginia. After reading and re-reading the TLB vs SS debates, and getting input from folks I live near and work with I致e decided to go with a used SS. The main reasons I知 going with an SS is that it was built to dig and will readily accept attachments. I値l be doing site prep, a bit of land clearing, digging a septic system, and just general use in order to get my land ready to build a house. I may get a CUT TLB down the road, but for the immediate need the SS suits my what i need to do.
After helping my neighbor dig his pond with a rented SS I asked him to keep an eye out on a good used machine. He emailed me last night to inform me that one of his employees is going through a divorce and looking to sell his New Holland LS170 SS. I just got off the phone with the owner and got the basic details of it: he痴 the 2rd owner, it痴 a 2000 model, it has around 2200 hours, pins have some slop in them, doesn稚 smoke, hydro motors don稚 whine, one of the cylinders weeps until it痴 running, the tires have about 30% left on them and it comes with a 4n1 and a toothed bucket. He痴 asking 9k but my neighbor said he壇 take considerably less. My neighbor also stated he used it about a year ago and everything worked well.
My question is : would you consider 2200 hours too much on this machine? I know the 2500 hour number has been mentioned for useful life before bad things start to happen mechanically. As far as the LS170, what else should I be on the lookout for on it? What can I expect to fix or fab on a regular basis? I知 not intimidated at the prospect of turning wrenches to fix my equipment or fabbing things (I own a machine shop), but would still like some input on what to expect on this model.
What say you TBN'ers?
Thanks ahead for the input.
