I'm looking at purchasing a used Woods rotary cutter. Its a 60" cutter. As you can see from the picture, the right support was damaged unloading it from a trailer. The dealer is asking $650. Do you think that's a good price? Any concern with the damaged support? Thanks.

well it looks nice enough. Did you have them raise it so you could look at the blades? I can see that the support is bent but can it be removed? If so then it can be straightened. If its welded on the unit then I would see if its pulled everything to the right. Could be a pita hooking up to a tractor until its fixed. Doesn't look bad to me but I can't see the damage that well. OK I looked at the pictures again after posting, looks like all the support stuff can be unbolted. If you can't straighten it, that will cost up to 50.00 to get straighten at my local weld shop.

No at this point, I have not had them raise up the unit so I can inspect the blades or the spindle for play. I'd like to take a look at the gear oil to see its condition too. The support can be removed. It is just bolted on.

I have a BB60. It's a nice cutter and that's a very, very good price. Assuming that with a little wrench turning and "persuasion" you can get the stays off and hammer 'em straight, I'd jump right in.

I'd have to pass. The sides on the BB60 is very thin and weak. My uncle's, AND my neighbor's didn't last long at all. If I were you, I'd look for a Bush Hog SQ720 or SQ172 Squealer and wouldn't look back. But if Bush Hog isn't available, go with a Land Pride...

I have one just like it in a 72". I bent mine in exactly the same way. I think it bends when you back into something (like a tree) i used mine for several years with them bent and one finally broke. No big deal as those pieces are just steel straps and can easily be made. Buy the steel, cut to length and drill a hole at each end, and bolt them on. I did this for less than $20. If it is a good price (I forgot what the retail is) and nothing else is damaged, by all means get it. It is a good cutter, not an extreme duty one but a good dependable one nevertheless. I abuse mine, and it has lasted for years. Check the blades and gear oil, run it and make sure it spins with no vibration or noise. If that checks out, you should be fine. Mine is way more trashed. I finally bent the sides and wore down the skids by dragging it too low over rough rocky soil, but a welder easily repaired it, and it is still going strong. I am pretty hard on mine, dragging it through the woods, snagging stumps and rocks. I also have the next level Woods, a heavier duty model with thicker steel and replaceable skid shoes. But I paid over $2000 for it, and it really doesn't work any better, just a little stronger. I do like the bolt on skid shoes as I tend to wear this area out quickly. But that's because of using it in rough cutovers and uneven ground. THe damage I see is just cosmetic. Go for it. That looks like a good price and it's a good cutter.

looks like a small torch and hamer job to fix, then perhaps some angle iron for support and a can of orange paint. looks like an afternoon job with a cold drink.
