In the past month I've missed out on 2 tractors to a local fellow who appears to be flipping them. He and I seem to be targeting the same size machines (25-35HP 4WD with loaders). He buys them then reposts the exact same add with a higher price to a neighboring craigslist rather then the one he bought it from, he even uses the pictures from the original seller. Although I find his flipping frustrating there's really nothing truly objectionable about it. What is objectionable is he lies about the ownership and who knows what else. I know this because I've contacted him about both machines and he claims to have owned them for several years, or they've been in the family and he's selling for his brother, etc. But it's not true. I spoke to the original owner of one of the machines after this fellow bought it. When I saw it resisted on Craigslist, I contacted the number I'd used before but was told he'd just sold it. Turns out the flipper gave him a real sob story and the seller fell for it. Dishonest, but not illegal or unheard of, though the seller was very upset by being taken. When I contacted the new owner about it, he claimed it was in the family for 25 years and he was selling it for his brother. The original owner told me this was total BS.
So my question is, how would you handle this? One part of me says, 'don't be a sore loser'. The buyers and sellers in these transactions are adults and need to be responsible for their own actions and I just need to move on one of these deals faster than he does. But another part of me sees a dishonest character, lying to make money, and I'd like to warn potential buyers. If he were straight forward about his dealings 'I just found this on Craigslist for a song and I'm cleaning it up a bit and trying to make a few bucks' at least I could respect that.
I'm curious. How would you handle this? Speak up? Shut up? Butt-out?
