Optima D51R Discontinued

After having difficulty finding the Optima D51R yellow top battery that has been recommended as a replacement for the 4310 battery, I called Optima. According to the customer service person at Optima, the D51R yellow top has been discontinued. There is no equivalent replacement.

So, if you have a 4310 and have been thinking about replacing the battery with a D51R, you had better grab one if you can find it. 3 of the local national auto parts chains that stock Optima have none of the D51R in stock. I checked several on-line sites and they all show the battery as out of stock. I did order one from Sears but I'm not convinced I will see it.

I was in a local battery store with optima as one of their product lines. I asked about the D51/D51R for my 2210 and he told me the same thing. Apparently they have been having alot of returns on this model and discontinued it.

I asked Optima, here is their response:

At this time, the Group 51 Optima's are not available. I have no timeframe
from our product group as to when/if that model will be available again.

I purchased a similar style battery by 'Exide' from Sam's Club......

I have one local for $115 - should I get it for the 3320? How are people mounting them?

I can't comment on the mounting in a 3320. Check the manufacturing date on the D51R. This battery was discontinued about a year ago. The local Sears auto center did find a D51R for me at another Sears store but the manufacturing date was 2004. I talked with the folks at Optima and they said "don't buy it". Not only because of the age but also if you have any problems with the battery under warranty there will be no replacement available.

Thanks Don. I ended up with a JD battery. I still had 14 months left on the battery warranty so it worked out well. The replacement JD battery is different than the original so hopefully it will hold up better.
