Optimizing towing vehicle

1/2 ton with 12K tow rating, I don't think so. The hitch may be rated at 12K with WD but the truck is somewhere around 9,000# max with 4.10 gears. 3.73's are 8,000# according to my 2004 GM guide.

This is for LB trucks. Add 200# for SB trucks.

Actually since you are such a huge fan, I am surprised. Ford's advertising their 2015 aluminum F150 with a max tow rating of 12,200. That is due to a loss of almost 700lbs truck weight. Not sure of configuration, just quoting their ad. The ad did mention with the eco boost engine.

Here's the quote off the Ford web site,

Tow more than any other light-duty pickup. And tow smarter than ever.

• New 8-inch Productivity Screen* – provides a screen dedicated to towing information
• Class-exclusive** Dynamic Hitch Assist* – line-of-sight guide helps direct your hitch ball to the trailer receiver
• Smart Trailer Tow Connector* – alerts to burned out or unlit trailer marker lamps, brake light and trailer battery problems
• Standard Trailer Sway Control – helps keep your trailer on a stable course
•Trailer Brake Controller (TBC)* – factory-installed and integrated into the instrument panel; helps synchronize the truck and trailer brakes
Best-in-class 12,200-lb. maximum tow rating**
... Less
*Available feature.
**Class is Full-Size Pickups under 8,500 lbs. GVWR.

Yes, a newer 1/2 ton. They have all been above 11K since 2011.

His is a 2004. That's 3 to 4 generations back. Worlds of difference.

Yea I know, just had to rattle your cage though! :). Was looking at the FMC web site and with peak torque at 2500, it's impressive, but like I said my Duramax isn't leaving my stable.

I see Ford isn't immune to working the numbers though. Instead of talking about increased HP numbers it hp to weight ratio. The increase there helps more at higher speeds than low, but it's marketing. I wonder if those new numbers are according to the SAE J2807 standard?

Good to see SOMEONE finally develop a standard for truck ratings, they need so standardize the RV (trailers and 5th wheels) weight and length standards. Also based on reading the utter confusion, even experienced commercial drivers have with a trucks capabilities, those standards need to be clarified AND simplified. Every truck should clearly state in laymans terms (vast majority of rv towers) what is legal.

Yes, the 2015 F150 meets the J2807 standard for tow ratings. Supposedly, the F250-F450 will be rated that way at the next revision of the standard.

Pretty amazing half ton, I gotta say. If I ever get to where I can afford a new truck (doubtful since I am retired) the Fords will be high on my list since the 6.7TD seems to be a reliable engine. I have always preferred the interior of Fords over GM, but the years of diesels I could afford were those of the 6.0.
