Hope the answer to this question is not so obvious but here goes. Im looking at a litle yanmar that smokes some under load and does not clear up. What are my options. Any way to clear it up with out a total rebuild. What would a rebuild cost on an early model yanmar. Im pretty mechanical but probably want to make sure it is done right. Tractor is in nice shape and really like it. What all would you have done in the rebuild. Thanks

IMO some smoking from a diesel engine when under a load is the nature of the beast;) when you suggest Blow-by are you meaning unburned fuel?
are you having residue blowing from out the muffler? Does the engine wind over allot before starting? if so, then yes this may be time to consider a cylinder honing and ring job.

My 1700 smokes some at first start and clears, but does not smoke when using it for simple tasks, although when I hook it to a plow or some sort of ground contact implement, or in other words-> "put it under a load", then yes it will give a good puff of smoke, but then clears away after a few seconds, though I've not seen any residue blow out, the engine in my 1700 fires off right away so I know it has good compression,

Mine will roll the light black smoke when its got a load on it. Like burying a plow and pulling it or if i have a 6ft finish mower hooked to it cutting tall grass the whole time. but idleling or just normal cutting or whatever you have to stand there and look really close with the sunlight just right to see anything. Its not like i leave a cloud or anything.

That tractor sounds a bit normal.

It isn't blowby if it is coming out the exhaust. There is a separate breather line on the engine. Do you get smoke from one or both of those, and what color?

Depending on how bad it is, you could just ignore the smoke and run the thing. If it is a stuck ring, running it hard actually might clear up those symptoms.

It will depend on what early model Yanmar. There is quite a difference between having a YM173 or a YM2000. The 173 will be expensive, if it is
possible to rebuild at all. The 2000'will be cheap compared to others. Similarly, a simple ring job will run about $150 from Hoye, including shipping: $47.42/ apiece for the two ring sets, and $43 for the head gasket.

In contrast, re-ringing an 1810 will cost more than that just to purchase rings, and the head gasket is another $58 dollars. If you need sleeves, budget an additional $260 or more.

The other way to look at it is that replacing most of the engine parts in even a 3 cylinder version, including all seals and bearings, but not the rods, crankshaft, or camshaft hard parts, one would be hard pressed to spend $1000.

Without knowing the symptoms in more detail it is tough to recommend a budget or course of action, but your interest in rebuilding the engine, the initial price, and the local value of comparable machines may help you decide if it is financially logical.

The tractor is a three cyl 186. Dont think there is blow buy but I do get a fair amount of smoke when I hit the foot throttle. I really love the tractor and I inclined to do it right when and if I get into it. Have not checked the avaliability of parts to do this but would think that hoye will have what I need for the 186.

If you replaced EVERYTHING, I think you could get the engine done for about 11-1200 dollars from Hoye, minus the crankshaft, which is not listed. (For the 186, 1401, or 1510) That would do every gasket, seal, valve, sleeve, piston, connecting rod, etc.

If you're just getting a stream of smoke when increasing the throttle, you'll be in it much less than that. Is the smoke blue or black?

Is this your current 186, or another one?

Have you already done the normal things for a smoky diesel? First thing is always to change the fuel and filters. Might as well check or change the engine oil and coolant at the same time....then add some injector cleaner.

Do those things then run it at medium load and full RPM for an hour or so... BTW, the easiest way I know to run at moderate load and full RPM is to do it on the road. Either pick a long incline or pulling a small trailer for the better part of an hour. That should give you the news on the engine.

The 186 you are looking at was a real popular tractor and was a US model rather than gray market - which means the parts market is even more in your favor. Someone mentioned a Yanmar 173? I've not heard of that model...maybe that was the point.
