oran p218 is shutting down when hot

I have a jd 316 lawn tractor that starts up and runs great. After about
a 1/2 hour it just stops. like you shut it off. When you wait about a hour it
will start up and run again. I changed the coil. When it shuts off there is
no spark at the plugs. can you help me

I suggest you start a new post in this same Board and title it so members who might help will recognize the problem. barndoor for a subject is a bit confusing, but suspect it was just filling in the wrong line and it can't be changed (I don't think ).

Something like "Onan 218 shuts down".

Seems if I recall, this is air cooled? And are you sure there are no mouse nests restricting the cooling around the heads, if air cooled.

Someone is surely to know more about this and can help.

Next time this happens, loosen the gas cap immediately and see if there is a vacuum release of air back into the tank. I had a similar proplem and it was a plugged cap. I didn't check the spark though. Mine shut off because the fuel pump could not overcome the vacuum because the vent hole was plugged and it litterly ran out of gas. After sitting 30 min or so it would restart and run another 20 min until it happened all over again. If that is your problem it needs immediate attention or your fuel pump diaphram will rupture leading to replacement of the fuel pump.

tried the gas cap thing. I thought that was it, the cork was stuck to the top
of the gage. It ran for about one hour then it started its shut off again. thanks
any other suggestions.

The other thing that shut my engine down was a mouse chewed wire going to the starter. It was not completely chewed threw and was held togather by the insulation. So it was hard to spot. When the wires bounced some while mowing it would break the copper wire contact (but the wire did not seperate) and the mower would shut down just as you described. Lost power to the engine. The fix was to cut out the wire at the chewed area and re-splice it togather with a in-line crimp. The red ones. Look at all the wires from the key to the starter. Some are under the battery so use a mirror and a flashlight to see under it unless there is a chewed one in plain sight.:confused2:

Next time it dies check for spark. I had a coustomer with one of these engines in a Simplicity and the condensor would fail when hot. They are a PITA to get to but I had to change at least two a year on that engine.

Dan, He did say when it shuts off there is no spark in the first post, so you may have the solution to his problem in your post.

would a wire broken to the starter keep it form starting back up. The starter seems to
turn over but no spark.
Is there a way to check the condensor and see if they are good before I go and buy one. does anyone think it is the ignition module or the magnetic ring
or the stator under the flywheel I really don't want to pull the engine.

Had the same issue with my old 318 and after replacing coil and fuel pump with no improvement. Found a post on this board that recommended replacing ignition switch. This solved the issue! Have a spare coil and fuel pump now!
