Pls indulge my excursion from tractor topics, but since this board has been immensely helpful to me I figured I'd give this a shot...

I'm purchasing a 1970 Plymouth Satellite from Canadian owner and plan to trailer it myself from Canada to California, in time to be my daughters college graduation present. Would appreciate any advice/comments from those here who have done this or know how to do it. TIA.

Bringing it over the border yourself will probably make it easier.

Check with your local licencing body regarding what they look for as a proof of purchase (title) as many Canadian provinces do not have that kind of documentation. Here in Manitoba all that is required is a bill of sale and filling in a "Transfer of Ownership" on the back of the current registration. I sold a car to a new owner in North Dakota and they accepted that documentation. Check with the currant owner regarding what he/she can supply.

Any pollution standards may be different, check to see what is required and what the car has. Canadian cars are different than US cars.

Check with US Customs before you make the trip. When my old Chevy went south they didn't seem to care, but things may be different now.

Just geting a pile of stuff ready for the Swap Meet and I knew I had a shop manual, but it is for a 69.

Not much help.

Malibu...thx for the input, was hoping our Canadian friends would chime in. Guidelines on US customs website indicates cars older than 25yrs don't need the usual EPA/pollution inspection. I will definitely ask about the title.

The same website specifies must have proof of ownership which could be the transfer of ownership registration and/or bill of sale if no title available. They also claim that since its a US manufactured car, there is no custom duty imposed.

A US Plymouth, not a Canadian one? They were manufactured in Canada as well.

Yes, US Plymouth, still with US title.

Rich,

I purchased a new vehicle from a NY dealer a couple years back. They got it from Canada.

There was a bunch of forms needed for importation. Unfortunately for me, the dealer didn't get all of them. I would check with your state's DOT to see what you need for getting a title and registration.

Something as a sidenote here (and one reason Dodge/Chrysler irks me so bad I'll never buy another) They tried to wiggle out of a warranty issue on our Canadian Roadtrek stating it because it's in US, from Canada, it was GRAY MARKET!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Well, I looked their own rules up and it's only been the last two years they started that malarkey. They paid.

Man, I hate Dodge service.
