Yanmar 1500D
Great...........I was moving dirt to fill low spots tonight when the right front wheel of my 1500D locked up and jerked the steering wheel out of my hand. That really hurt.

I haven't pulled it apart yet to see what broke but went on-line to get an idea of what the parts will cost. Ouch again. Double ouch since I discover there is a "G" and an "R" type front end and I have no clue which one I have. Says you have to know what the original color of your hood was. Give me a break. I don't even know if I have the original hood. I suspect that I do not since I have a 1500D and my hood has 1500 decals.

So really....how do I figure out which one I have?

Would it be cheaper and easier to just get a used front end for it?

If you got used there would be extra parts for other repairs in future. My 2cents worth.

You probably need to move this post down to the Yanmar forum. Here is how you can tell whether you have a red or green Yanmar. The greens were the earliest models. The bell housing was a stamped steel piece. The bell housing will have a smooth finish. The red 1500's had a cast bell housing. They will have a rougher texture to them. Keep us posted.

Here
is an old post from someone who rebuilt an early series axle. It includes sources that may have your parts.

Thanks Moderator!

Well it has been raining here for the past two days so I haven't done anything yet. I have to work outside and it really isn't important enough to get wet over. But I think I have it figured out. I printed out the parts diagram for both models, played "where's Waldo" and found the difference between the parts. So once I take it apart I will know which model I have.

But now I have another mystery to solve for future reference. Why was the post moved to the Yanmar forum? I ignored the call to post it down here because I knew I had it in the right place. But then it got moved. So, for future reference, why exactly did it get move.

You see, I carefully thought about where it should be before I posted it. The heading for the Yanmar forum says it is for the discussion of Yanmar tractors and equipment.

The heading for the Parts/repairs forum says it is for the General compact tractor parts and repairs discussion.

Since I was discussing compact parts and repairs and not discussing Yanmar tractors and equipment, I posted in the Parts/repairs forum. But somebody seems to think that my discussion of parts and repairs was actually a discussion of tractors and equipment.

Help me out here so I won't make the same error in the future. Does the general compact tractor parts and repairs discussion forum means general except Yanmar? And since there is a specific forum for virtually every brand of tractor known, would all parts and repair discussions go into the forum for that specific brand and not in the general parts and repair forum?

And if all that is true, what exactly is the purpose of the General parts and repair forum? Seems to me that there really is no purpose for it.

Now don't get excited? Just want to clear it all up so I don't post in the wrong forum again.

Probably because you asked how to tell what model Yanmar you have, a G or an R model.
A lot of the "in the know" Yanmar people don't frequent the Parts/Repairs forum. The moderator may have felt you'd get a better response here. Don't get worked up over it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had a similar experience with a post in the repair/parts section where I was looking for a Yanmar wiring diagram, and they moved it here (I actually posted it in both places, and both threads wound up here, right next to each other)
I guess they thought it would get a better response here, where there are more "Yanheads"
Incidentally, it worked, I got the answer I was looking for! Thanks to all who replied!

I am anything but worked up. Just want to understand the rules for next time.

Ok I'll fess up. I'm the one who thought it would get more responses in the Yanmar forum.

I thought only fellow Yanmar enthusiasts would have useful advice about a design change made 30 years ago and how others had resolved the front axle gear problem.

The initial post in this thread doesn't have the word Yanmar or YM--- in the title or text. Or the words 'axle', 'knuckle', 'hub', 'gear', 'kingpin', anything I could think of to search on when I wanted to get back and share with you MichiganBilly's description how he made new teeth. I thought many Yanmar owners would never see the thread.

I'm sorry if this isn't what you wanted. It was a simple attempt to help you get running again.

Ozarker,

On a hunch I looked up the response Jagmandave got to his wiring diagram request.

His post in the Yanmar forum got seven replies including three different wiring diagrams. Inside of two days he thanked everyone and posted a picture of his repair.

Over in Parts/Repairs nobody replied. Finally on the third day somebody replied they might have a diagram but with an inference Dave would have to buy it.

I think this better response in the brand-specific forum holds true in general.
