That's a really nice garden you have there. I see you have fenced in your garden. I would be a little embarrassed to upload a picture on my garden right now. It's weed city unlike your nicely mulched garden. Are you growing everbearing strawberries in the planters?

There are people like me who have big gardens and people like tile who have small gardens with creative use of space. I sure noticed his creative use of pots for strawberries. I just wondered if he put water in the top pot and let it drip down through all the rest. How would that work? Would the bottom pot eventually contain all the dissolved fertilizer?

Keep us updated, tile. Nice garden!

Thanks,

The guard creature does his fair share of eating :) Never knew that he would like his veggies.

Yep those would be everbearing strawberries, however since this is their first year I won't let them produce fruit or runners. It's hard not to let them set but should be worth it. Don't tell anyone but there are weeds in there.

Jinman,

We use a concentrated liquid fertilizer added to 48 +/- gallons at a rate of 1 oz per gallon. Not exact math but you get the idea. The media is a mix of perlite and coconut fibre which does not hold the water mixture the same as a traditional soil bed would. This system runs 4 times a day on a timer so the plants are kept moist and fed. The timer is set to run just long enough for it to start a steady drip to ensure that all plants got a fair drink.

I would guess that since it is a pure liquid mix that the fertilizer would be absorbed at an even rate, assuming even watering. The excess water drains out the bottom pot so I do not end up with a soggy bottom :)

I'm curious now to see if there is any build up in the bottom pot, however my guess would be not.

I've never been a huge fan of the loss of water thru the design of this system so I've purchased the items for a recirculating system. I've got it almost ready to go, just have to fill and plant. Once I get that one setup I'll upload a few pics.

Tile
My border collie mix LOVES getting peapods after the peas are taken out. They are candy to her or something. Yellow and green beans have been going nuts in the heat. Put up 7 quarts last nite, plus all fo have eaten!!
