Up until this weekend I've been using outlook express as my email client to check email on a dial up internet account ( at&t ).

I just got embarc DSL installed. Was a piece of cake to get internet explorer to find the internet over the lan vs a dial in connection.. Outlook claims to 'share' connection settings with explorer.. and even shows 'any available connection' in the config box. Also shows 'network' when checking email.. however it never does connect.. says no port is available. I can still read my AT&T email via web mail.. but would love to have my email client back.. any ideas?

thanks

Did you enter the POP account info, server name and password in account settings?

Check your email settings. My provider uses ports 25 & 995. You may require ports that are not the default in OE. There may be some other setting that require manual intervention and that do not set up automatically if you run connection wizard.

Please provide name of OS you are using to aid with trouble shooting suggestions.

Win xp home edition.

Hmm.. can't answer the other questions.... All I know is in explorer i had to change it from using dial up connection.. added new connection and tol dit to connect over the network.. still had some problems. then got rid of the proxy server checkbox.. then explorer had no problems.. and outlook tools/options/connections screen brings up the same screen as explorer.. even says it shares the same connection info.. etc.. so there is no way to set it any different as it uses explorers connection info..e tc/.. so I'm at a los here..

Cinder is probably right. POP, IMAP and SMTP all use specific ports to traverse the network. Get the mail server settings from your new provider and make sure that that OE is set they way they require. Its not the connection to the wan it sounds like the port you are trying to access their mail server on.

In OE click on Tools / Accounts / Properties
Connection tab should have "Always connect " checked. Connect option should be LAN
"Advanced" tab - Check for proper SMTP port (maybe 25) May need "This Server requires SSL" checked
Check POP server port (maybe 995) May need "Secure server" checked

"Servers" tab makes sure info filled in correctly for your DSL provider. May need "my Server requires authentication" checked - if so make sure "settings" are correct. May check "Remember password" Probably don't check "log on using" box.

"General" tab - make sure "include this account" box is checked.
Chances are if you just ran "Connection Wizard" you have missing or incomplete information for the OE application.

We got Embarq DSL just about 3 months ago, after years of dialup service with Verizon. The wife hooked up my Outlook Express as my e-mail and tells me that there are specific directions on how to do what you want to do. I had trouble like you, until she did it for me.

Be careful because I had to use the Embarq e-mail for a few days until she could get it done for me. Embarq does not save e-mails like Outlook does and drafts of e-mails are not saved as you're used to either. Cinder's info looks right on the money!!

I think there has been some mis-communication here.

I had AT&T dialup.. used outlook express to check the email

I ADDED embarq DSL.. it has it's own email program.. I check my embarq account with it's email program.. all works fine ( it's web based.. ).

Now.. I still want outlook to check my AT&T email.. I'm not trying to get outlook to check my embarq mail... In other words.. i kept my AT&T account and email address.. etc ( I'd had it for uh.. at least 15 years and don't feel like changing all my address around all at once.. besides.. AT&T is cheap if you bring your own connectivity.. like 4.95$.. so it's cheaper to keep it then deal with the hassels.

Since my outlook is still setup for my AT&T account I'm still at a loss...

Again- it's probably your port settings, usually the ports for sending and recieving email are standard but your ISP can change them for various reasons. When you were on dial-up with AT&T you were probably using standard ports, your new ISP probably doesn't. You just need to contact your new provider and find out the ports (one for sending and one for recieving) and change them in Outlook Express. If you have all ready done this and you have the right ports and you have a new router, you may need to open the ports on the router (access it via a web browser as per the instructions that came with it)- usually the standard ports are all ready open on a new router, but probably not non-standard ones. Internet Explorer will access the web over a different port than the email even though they are using the same connection. Outlook express hasn't been updated in years, and you might find a new email program helpful- a free on is Thunderbird by Mozilla.

AAhhhh. In OE under Tools - Accounts - Properties for the ATT account make sure "Always use this account" is checked and then un the option box make sure it says "ATT Dialup" or whatever the account is called. When finished on the accounts tab under connection it should say "name of dialup"

Under Internet Properties - make sure the DSL LAN is set as the default, assuming you want IE to access the web with DSL

You still might consider using OE for the DSL then all mails / address etc are just in one program. I find it a real PITA to use more than one email client.
