On my Shibaura SP1540 I overfilled the hydraulic reservoir. Will this hurt anything?

If you have a manual.. check it. Some hyd resv's are made so that they can be over filled a bit .. for instance if you have remotes that use alot of oil.. with cyls extended.. you still need the 'minimum' oil in the sump.. but when retracted.. you have some overfill.

My old 1955 ford 660 owners manual states that you can over fill by x quarts.. etc. same with my 2002 NH 7610s... Still.. I'm guessing the ability to safely overfill is tractor model specific. Unless you can find it in writing or from a knowledgeable dealer/mechanic.. I wouldn't overfill it.

1 gallon. I bought this thing with no manual and can't read Japanese...didn't know where the dipstick was. I was having problems with the hydraulics and wanted to make sure it had enough oil, so I dumped in a whole gallon. I later found the dipstick and now see that it is way over the full mark. The hydraulics problem was resolved by making sure all of the switches are set correctly on the control box. I figured it was similar to power steering reservoir where too much doesn't hurt anything, but wanted to make sure.

well just drain a half gallon out & see where the dip stick reads
thats easy enough to do.

Many tractors have a fill level plug on the side of the trans/rear end case so you can remove the plug while filling and when oil starts running out, you are done. It will be messy but you can remove that plug if you have one and let the oil drain down to it's proper level, put the plug back in.
What brand and model of tractor?

The SP1540 doesn’t have the level plug option
