Can over filling the engine oil in a diesel tractor cause it to eventually over rev (rpm's max out and stay at 26) with black smoke coming from the exhaust? In which case the throttle cant control the rpm's. The only way to stop over revving is to pull the fuel shut-off. Afterwards the engine can start up again and run fine until it happens again at some point.

If this problem is not related in some way to overfilling the engine oil then what might be some signs of a problem or damage?

Sure can,did it with a 6k diesel lombordini. Had to choke the air intake to get it to shut down.

did you continue to experience over revving after reducing the oil level?

No, it behaved after that !

Yep. A diesel will run on about any fuel and you over filling the oil gives it a fuel, that excess oil.

Really appreciate the feedback! Its a bit of a relief finding out what caused the problem. However, the over revving did occur again when operating a couple hours after I had corrected the oil level. Is it possible that its just a residual effect and that after continuous operation the problem of over revving will stop? Since then it hasn't occurred during further operation.

Depends on how the oil can get into the intake. Deutz had positive crankcase ventilation back in the 80's. We mounted a hydraulic pump on the auxiliary drive. Some pumps were defective, blew out the seal, pumped hydraulic oil into the crankcase, extremely overfilled crankcase with crank churning things up, had 5 reports of engine over speeds and really frightened operators until we quickly relocated the pump. Engines speeding, and speed continuing to increase, extreme fear to be around the combine so they watched until the engine seized. We gave 5 new engines of course.

Has the oil level increased again since draining it?... Does it smell like it has diesel fuel in it?..
This kinda sounds like the governor in the fuel system has excessive wear and may be hanging up... since you can pull the fuel shutoff and the engine dies... if it were running on oil, it would continue to try and run. Does it do that?
