No kidding this is poor design. Kubota has since eliminated the ORC on newer L3400s but I appear to be stuck with it.
Funny, in a recent letter the Kubota service rep here pointed out to me that in his opinion I was trying to get an "upgrade" to my tractor from them even though my tractor was working properly.
I don't consider fixing crappy design to be an "upgrade".
Boy am I ever irritated with Kubota on their handling of any thing L2800/L3400 related. Those JD 3x20s are looking better every day - particularly since I can buy from the USA for an awesome discount (25%) compared to here given the exchange rate AND JD warranty applies across North America!
