Our backhoe has a very very sensitive left -right swing problem. I think it's actually kind of dangerous. Is there any way to adjust the swing rate. this is an old JD 300 industrial 1965-72 era hoe
Thanks

what about adding a restrictor orifice to the swing cyl? adjust orifice up with drill bit if it is too restricted at purchase.

Have you ever checked stand-by pressure? I think pressure should be around 2300 psi. If pressure is correct then I'll 2nd the use of restricters.

I recall first operating a JD 310 in 1970 or so, brand new and me to it. I thought the swing was 'way touchy then. Lots of embarrassing pendulum swings with my hands in the air - why won't the dumb thing be less sensitive! I think the geometry of the swing motors meant they made good motion with not too much oil. I thought it was maybe over engineered.
As I got faster at digging the swing seemed like a better match with crowd and curl, and allowed fairly fast digging and especially bailing in those pre-excavator days.
Not saying your rig is working correctly. Is what it is doing now a change from before? Is there binding in the motion that could have you overcompensating? These are good rigs when working right.

You can adjust the swing rate by not pushing the lever as far. :) And yes I agree that it is very sensitive but give yourself time to get used to the machine and once your a pro then the swing speeds will be just about right or even a bit on the slow side.

what engine rpm are you running?
I often see newbies use way to high an rpm needed to get the job done.
Don't lug the engine either though.

secondly does a softer "touch" like a 2 handed control on the stick make a difference?

Small machines ar much quicker than the big guys.

My back hoe is also very quick on the swing. With a little practice you can develop a light touch.

I let an older operator try it once, he quit after about 5 minuets.

Backhoes work best when 2 or more functions are used at the same time. Not usually a problem wen digging but can make the swing seem oftly(sp) fast when used by itself. The hardest thing for me is getting the swing to stop smoothly just where I want it. The newer machines are much easier to control though.

another issue is pin and bushing wear. slop in either can make a function get slopy... and sloppy may be felt especially in swing..

Yep, as suggested, I'm sure you can get some sort of "flow-restricter" for the swing stage.
Something similar thats used on the 3pth.
Reduce the flow and it should reduce the swing speed.
Adjust it as you go, until you feel comfortable with the speed.
Check out the "Hydraulic Forum" there's some good info in there.
