When I was having hard starting issues, I know I overheated the starter, more than once.
Now after getting the engine back together, the starter turns the engine over slowly and at a varying speed. Like there is a power issue. I am assuming this is because I overheated the starter in the past, and it is damaged.
Can it be repaired? or is it a replace only thing at this point? Battery is charged, and added jumper cables to the starter to make sure that there was enough power, and there was no change.

Thanks

Sounds like a warped stator, and some may be rebuildable. Which starter motor is on the Rhino 324? The model number should be a data plate riveted or glued to the starter housing.

Could be many issues, try cleaning all the connections on battery, + and - as well as any Bolts between Block and the Battery terminals. check the Starter Terminals and the BOLTS that connect the Starter for clean and free of paint. If those are all good and tight & clean (free from paint) then time to look at starter.

Pull it off and look at the brushes and commutator for damage. they are Easy to rebuild not much to one just be sure to make sure it is all clean and free from paint when re-assembling. (don't paint all the little parts individually and put together will have issues.) Probably melted the brushes or springs for them some so loosing power there.

This is what my Brushes looked like after the Zip Tie I had holding the Hydraulic QD Up out of the way BROKE sometime while I was away , it fell down against the HOT post and the SOL post on the starter cranking engine over. It started up (I always leave it in "N" just in case even prior to this incident.)

I went into the barn the next day, Battery was "0" Engine was running at idle & burnt up 3/4 tank of fuel. :/:eek: :( Was a BAD day for sure... I had extra starter so I put it on, re-charged the battery and fired up OK...

Photos or didn't happen right, so HERE ya go.

click the thumbnail pick then cycle thru the starter rebuild pics on Photobucket.

BTW the Battery is FACTORY unit, charged in 2002 with Acid by ME and 1st charge from NEW> I also used the Chemical Stabilizer (double dose of it as in 2003 and in 2004 I left Key ON for over a week battery at both times read less than 2 volts...) Hit battery with 200 AMP booster for 5 min or until all cells are boiling, drop back to 75 amp for 15 min and then overnight at 10+ amps. This sets the battery for use.

Spiker, what is the name of the Chemical stablizer you dumped in that 11+ year old battery. I remember years ago in the JCWhitney catalogue, they had something that stated it would renew a battery. I sure would like to keep baatteries for 8 years or more, as they are about $115 a pop now. I see you added when new, so I know that probably helped. While on the subject of cranking, about how long in seconds do you have to keep the starter engauged before the engine fires up? My tractor, does not have glow plugs and sometimes I have to crank twice to get it to catch.

The number on the side of the starter is QDJ1308.
Thank you for helping. I do not think it is a power issue, the battery is charged, and I had jumper cables from my truck, right to the starter.
I have not removed the starter yet, but that may be the next move

Can't remember the exact name of it, something like Battery Saver or Battery Boost. I got that battery chemical from JC Whitney the first time I used it like 20 years ago, the last time I bought 2 bottles from Harbor Freight of all places. Last time I looked for it they were no longer carrying it... At one point they had it at NAPA but that was long time ago too. I looked for the chemical when I burnt out the starter figuring it measured 0.0 battery voltage, that it would not recover & figured I would have to replace it. after boosting the battery it came back to life and still holding great charge. and NOPE I can't remember but found the bottle a while back where it is NOW or the name of it I have no clue.
