What type of twine are you running. How short have you ever made the bales.

i have been trying to make them small for the wife to move but the bales does not seem to like it. They come out shorter on one side.

Basically any JD baler since the 14T operates about the same...:D

Bale length is set by adjusting the stop in the triangle...

If you are getting banana shaped bales...

1. Ground speed of baler too slow and/or windrow is too small
S. Increase ground speed, reduce baler rpm speed and/or maker bigger windrows.

2. Bale tensioner is too loose
S. Increase Baler tension

3. Baling extremely light hay
S. Incorrect feeding---If hay does not fill the chamber, increase the ground speed or increase the windrow size.

I am leaning toward windrow to small.
I will try to double up the rows. Since the machines are old I have a tendence to go slow.
It did seem the longer the bales were the more even they came out.
The smallest i was making was about a foot.I would have to measure to be totally accurate.

The other thing that i noticed was the bales rocks back and forth which inturn jolts the tractor.this is normally notice when the plunger rams the hay into chamber.Being new to farming. Only the second year baling for me I did not know if it is normal?Or how much is acceptable.

Are you saying the bales rock in the chamber or the baler is rocking??
If it's the baler that is rocking, that's just the linear forces of the plunger being dissipated...:)
How large is your tractor?

Your bales should be nice and tight...If bale tension spring adjustment is NOT adequate...You may have to add SIDE HAY RESISTERS...Check with the dealer, before going this route, because bale case damage can occur...

My tractor is a international hyrdo 84. Yes the tractor and baler rock with motion.

what is adequate spring tension? is all baler different? is there a base starting point?

Trying to tell you what adequate bale tension is over the internet is next to impossible...

Do you have cranks or just the nuts on your bale tensioning system?

If your current baler is making adequate bales...you can adjust the springs in quarter turns...or if they are loose...go with half to full turns...checking the tension of the bale after the bale is out of the baler...:D

Bale weight is regulated by bale chamber tension.

Bale weight is also affected by size of windrows, moisture content, and quality of the hay. These factors may vary from hour to hour or from windrow to windrow. Check bale weight regularly.

Remember to loosen the bale tension at the end of each day's operation.

ALSO write down the NUMBER of turns it takes to loosen the springs...
Next day you start by cranking down each spring that number of turns...:)

I have crank handles on the tensioner. they have been played with so much that i dont know it they are even equal. being new i have more experienced friends that come over occasionally and set them "properly".
but they always look to me that they were way to tight. my small bales were very heavy.

like you said there are many factors for bale weight

Well, remember what ever you do to one of them you have to do the same to the other...:)

A lot of this information is available in the owner's manual which can be purchased new from John Deere or used off ebay.
