Same issues here about the tail lights and ck engine light... It has 389 hours works like a mule and still going strong. Ck engine light still on and it hasn't had an issue with it..

My CEL came with decreased power to the point I would have to down shift into low range 2nd gear to pull a hill that I normally mow in medium range 3rd or 4th gear. The result of the P1801 code was from not letting the computer completely reset before restarting the engine. After the tech cleared the code and "trained me" on letting the computer completely reset after turning the engine off, I have had no other issues with that.

When I had the tractor in for warranty work on the hydraulic hose, the dealer did do a software update. The tractor seems to have a little more power but that could be in my head. The only thing that I found weird was the grid heater indicator. The first year owning the tractor the grid heater indicator would only appear when the temps were down in the high twenty's or blow. After the update the grid heater indicator comes on every time I start the engine. It could be 90 degrees outside with a warm engine just shut down long enough to fill my tea glass and the grid heater indicator will cycle through like I am starting it in cold weather. Don't really hurt anything so I see it as a nonissue.

When I had the tractor in to have the third function kit installed last spring April of 17, they had some sort of code or software for the tractor. I'm not sure what it was they said they did it, I never looked into it since I didn't have any thing wrong with the computer or any lights on the dash. I just assumed it was something from the manufacturer to reset or fix something with all the computer on these things. As I said I only have 120 hours on it but I have never had any issues. The sales rep did tell me the biggest thing they were seeing with these tractors is the owners babying the tractors motor. They said run them when using the PTO run them at the correct rpm. As you 2540 owners our 540 PTO range is 2650 RPM's it seems real high and when mowing the tractor screams. I have always ran it at that speed when using the PTO, when just moving wood or using the tractor I put it in a lower gear and keep the RPM's between 1500, and 2000. I don't know if this is wrong but they told me at the dealership the biggest problem they were having is the motor gunking up or just not getting hot to burn or get rid of the stuff it does to operate correctly. For the rear plastic tail light holders is there a metal option or something better for this design? I replaced both of mine when the tractor had 8 hours on it one under warranty the other one me and the dealership worked out a deal for no charge on pickup and delivery if I paid for the second one. Just a cheap design on a pretty stout little tractor. They should just have made the fender come all the way back when making them.

Agreed on the cheap designed tail light assemblies, so far I have been doing well with the epoxy fix. When I am using the pto, I always run at 540. Usually I set the hand throttle at 1500 for any work I am doing with the exception of "precision" work (getting close to buildings with bucket). I agree that these things need the RPMs.

Its funny, my MF4707 is extremely sluggish until you bump the throttle to ~1200 rpm. At 1200 that engine comes alive and is a beast.

I agree on cel comming on because of running low rpms. Mine came on when it had 20 hours or so pushing dirt and it bogged the engine, I took it in and they reset it and did the up grade. Then I bogged down the engine again and it came on again the cel light. Have not taken it back they told me if it's not smoking or if it didnt loose power not to worry it's at 390 hours .. mowing heavy brush , pushing dirt , digging holes and box blade work and pulling 6 and a half disk horrows.

All these little diesel motors that are put in any small piece of equipment need to be ran. It is not like it used to be where they can just sit and idle, they gum up so to say. Work them!

Mine has 115 hours now (bought used with 48 hours) and the only issue I had was anything above 1700 rpm the engine would run erratically. I took it in and they flashed the ECU with an update and now it runs fine up to full throttle. I've had maybe 3 hours of PTO usage (6ft rotary mower cutting 2 miles of ditches on the county roads) which worked well, and the rest is moving trailers, spreading and leveling 25 yards each of sand and crushed concrete (bucket and rear blade), digging up roots and stuff with sub soiler, and moving snow with 6ft front plow and back blade. I make it a point to run the engine at full throttle for several minutes each time I'm using it before putting it away. I'm in a "rural suburban" type setting on 2.5 acres so it is probably babied compared to most other users. If and when I ever sell it, somebody will end up with a tractor that's barely been broken in. Of note, having the extra capacity of the 2540 FEL is an added plus (2538 has less capacity -- two less pivot points). Before I found my 2540 on CL, I was almost ready to pull the trigger on a new Branson. I'm sure I would have been happy with that one as well.
