Can anyone give me some pointers on what type of welding wire for oxy/acetylene welding of mild steel? I have some 3/32" ER70S-6 and some 1/16" RG-60, but I don't know what is best for general welding. I can't seem to find any info on gas welding rod recommendations. Thanks.

The company that refills your tanks should be able to help you with the rod you need. I usually stick weld but on occassion have used steel coat hangers when using a torch.

Learn sumpthin new everyday. Here's what AirGas has. I suspect that I've only used RG45 cuz the store I go to only has one choice. 'Course, I've used coat hangers and bailing wire too.

Edit: link didn't work right for me. Here's the path: All Categories > Welding Products > Filler Metal > Gas Welding Rod > Gas Welding Rod - Carbon Steel

I did ask at the welding supply store, but the regular counterman must have been at lunch. They had a young man on the counter who was not very knowledgeable on the subject. He knew about as much as I did. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

What is the differrence between R-45 and R-60?

I use 1/8" RG45 36" long (copper coated), stuff works great for just about anything, good filler properties as well.

Sorry, As I said in the previous post I use coat hangers, flux coated brazing rod or silverbraze rod. If your going to stick weld with an arc welder I could suggest various rods. Hopefully some others will log on with their input.
Or you could check the phone book for other places that sell oxy / acetelyne.
P.S. Homebrews link worked for me and shows the difference between R45 and R60

From the Air Gas link for those internet browsers that won't seem to follow the link.( "RG45 is a general purpose, copper coated, gas welding rod used for welding low carbon steels up to ¼” thick. It is a great selection when ductility and machinability are most important. You do not need a flux when welding with this product."

"RG60 is a high strength alloy used for gas welding of low carbon and low alloy steels. It is used in applications where a high tensile strength is needed. The high Silicon and Manganese content in the product eliminates the need for flux when welding.")
