I was going to suggest 412. That's how my brother who lives in Broken Arrow, OK (SE corner of Tulsa) came out to meet us at our condo in Red River. Not a bad drive, and that's how I was going to come from my Dad's place near Mountain Home, AR until our plans changed.

A lot of our neighbors in our condo association are from Texas. They probably outnumber all the rest of us from everywhere else. RR is a great place to relax and slow down, or take a drive up the trails, or rent an offroad vehicle to go on the more rustic trails. Then take a run down to Taos for a change of pace. Great places to eat in RR and in Taos. I'll be back out in September, but wish I'd been able to go last month to escape our heatwave.

Good luck with the trip.

We have been all over the Rockies but weather wise Red River has the most consistently cool summers of any place we have ever been. Grand Lake, Co is about the same, but we end up being actually cooler in Red River than most of the other mountain towns. Its a well kept secret I think, fairly crowded but never overcrowded winter and summer, and unpretentious. It is a way to escape the heat for a week, and enjoy the fresh air with no air conditioning needed. Rarely see 80 at Red River (and no humidity at all) and at the cabin where we stay up the Red River canyon which is a few hundred feet higher we have had freezing temps in July/August before, then perfect 72 degrees for the high.

Taos is a little crowded so we don't go there much but once you can find a place to park its a pretty cool town to walk around in.

Watch your speed thru Springer, NM. The speed limit signs dropping from 55 MPH to 30 MPH were 15 feet high on the pole with a bunch of other signs. If you were out of state the cop would take $10 bucks as your bond on the side of the road and told you if you didn't show up for court it was your fine. I doubt the city ever saw that money.

That's exactly why we love RR-it's much more laid back and with better weather than Breckenridge. We try to take an evening drive each night up the canyon east of town so my wife can see the deer. Often, we only have to go as far as the RV park on the east side of town to see the first herd, and then we frequently have them bedding down behind our condo.

This is making me even more anxious to get back out and to cool down.

Somehow, my guess is that is not exactly legal. Did you get any paperwork saying you paid the $10.

you can go to www.aaa.com redirect then click on travel and then triptik on left. You can then get directions. I have used them for years and you don't need to be a member to use this function.

Successfully made it to Red River. Went with the GPS route which was Tulsa to Enid to Woodward, Guymon, Boise City, Clayton NM, Springer, etc... The roads were in fact very good, actually 70% or so of the route was divided highway. Speed limits were 70 most of the way. Rather than leave from Ozark we drove on to Miami, OK and stayed in the Hampton there before heading to Red River the next day. The time per yahoo and the GPS was about 11 hours but it actually took about 13 hours for the 667 mile trip due to a high number and duration of stops.

Enjoying the cool temps now - it was 50 when we got here about 8:00 PM last night and had to run the heat in the cabin this morning. Got up to a balmy 72 today.

OK, now I'm officially jealous.
