I have enough sheds around here to always have room to park the tractor underneath one. You could probably count the number of nights it was left out in the open on one hand.
Recently I've noticed several spots on the loader frame where the paint has flaked off and there appears to be pretty severe rust underneath, as if the rust caused the paint to flake off. This is only on the loader; no problems on the Massey so far. I bought it in July 2003.
I hate to take on the job of sanding the frame down, priming, and repainting, but it looks like that'll be the only solution. Any others out there with this problem?

I have not had any problems to speak of with either of my Massey compact loaders. I have to watch things pretty close because poultry litter is pretty corrosive.

What brand of loader is it? If the paint is coming off in big flakes it might have been a prep problem prior to painting.

It's the 1040 Massey loader. I believe they are made by Sioux Equipment for MF? The chipped out areas aren't large, about like a silver dollar, but there are several. There hasn't been any indication of a problem until I noticed the paint was gone and pretty severe rust underneath. The remaining areas don't show any sign of blistering in the paint, etc. so I'll probably just try to sand out the problem areas and fix them unless other areas chip out. That will indicate a need to repaint the whole thing.

That is a sure sign of either poor preparation or contaminates between the metal and substrate (primer). Temperature changes that expand and contract the metal will cause those areas to pop or flake the paint/primer off.

You can tap the suspect areas with a small dead blow or rubber mallet. It won't harm any areas with proper adhesion, but will knock loose problem areas that may be missed during your repair.

Living in an area with high humidity, I have learned that all raw metal must be hand wiped (as a final wash) with denatured alcohol before any primer and paint is applied. It is cheap insurance with a 100% success rate for me.

Hopefully your problem is confined to a small area. Good luck.

A CORRECTION to my earlier posts. There is only one area that's a problem. The others that I noticed were only grease spots. With the time change I've not been around the tractor until late in the evenings, and when I saw the rusty spot I immediately saw several other areas that I THOUGHT were the same problem. After a closer review this afternoon I determined that there's only one area.
This is an indication that 1) I need to clean up my tractor, and 2) I need more seat time.

You might want to sandblast the effected area to completely eliminate the rust. Apply self etching primer and repaint.

Glenn, sounds like a good way to sell the CEO on that 1552 you were asking about. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have had a Half Dollar size paint chip at the left pining point of my loader for about a year now. The rust is very minimal where the bare metal is showing. It looks like the paint did not bond well at the factory. Mine sets under a carport with low sides so it sees some moisture but no direct rain fall. Plan is to touch it up later when I have a few more battle scares to take care of, unless it gets worse. Haven't seen anything like your seeing.
