painting farm gate

I have a red farm gate that is rusting and needs painting. What type of paint is good for this? Has anyone ever used asphalt paint before? What is the texture like,does it dry well?

Before I'd paint it, I'd check the price of a new galvanized gate, or a red gate if your set on having color. I purchased 3 of them, galvanized gates, about 12 years ago and still have no rust. With the steele prices as low as they are you may be money ahead to buy a new gate.

I remember him talking about mixing a brown paint and some other
material that lasts for years. If I remember right he came up with that mix after years of testing...

I bought two 16FT. galvanized gates 5 years ago for $69 a gate, and no signs of rust.

They sell some kind of silver looking coating you can put on gates to keep them from rusting, but don't know the correct name of it.

Orange steel primer. the kind used on I beams that stay outside. Good stuff.

I'll check out Harv's posts. I've seen his work on here before. The gate is in good shape, but I had some welded wire tied to it to keep some small animals in before and my goats rub on it. The wire rubbing on the paint has scrached it off. I was thinking about the asphalt paint, thinking maybe it would look good with creosote fence. I just didn't want to put it on if it doesn't dry competely. I've read somewhere that in the heat of summer it is messy.
