I have some impliments and tractor bits I need to get painted. Started looking around at paint and need to figure the difference between the valspar oil vs tractor & impliment.

Does any one know the difference wear wise and fading wise etc. im also interested in how it ends up looking with hardner. I may end up doing the farm truck as well.

The Valspar at TSC is good paint, I used it some years ago on a few trailers and it still looks great today, I dod thin it and used a HVLP to apply, But for the price it is very good

I've used both from TSC they work fine If you have to thin to spay use naptha, paint thinner will distort color painted a truck once and used thinner it turned out purple instead of blue never useded hardner but was never was in a hurry

If your useing a rattle can it does a good a Good job also

i almost exclusively use the valspar tractor paint. I thin with naptha for spraying, or mineral spirits for brushing. I use hvlp, syphon, and 1ressure pot sprayers..

I also use the hardner, and thus paint out in open air and still wear the best breather I can get.

The devil is in the details. do lots of metal prep, then clean and clean and prep and clean some more.. then prime, then paint. the more prep and cleaning.. the better the paint looks.

I have a hvlp grav to paint with. cant afford much so i dont have a nice compressor to run a pot with yet :/ Im interested in the hardener more for adding strength to the topcoat then speed of drying. I need a strong coating due to all the salt and mess from where i live. my car lated close to 10 years no rust moved here and 2 years it was starting to rust out. got to weld some pannels on it in the next couple weeks. I just sarted building a hay fork so i dont kill my self next summer which needs coating plus all the other odds and ends around that just got repaired etc.

finally got a welder that will let me get some work done. OA is just not my cup o tea :/ got a nice stick welder and can finish projects :D

My biggest wonder is oilbased paint going to be better against salt and such then the enamel? snow blower needs a bit of work now to....

"My biggest wonder is oilbased paint going to be better against salt and such then the enamel?"

You're mixing house paint terminology with automotive paint. Enamel is oil based as opposed to latex which is normally used on wood.

Rustoleum has a good reputation for holding back rust - Has something to do with using fish oil as a base.

ANY intact paint will be salt resistant.

the hardner should shorten cure time, add lustre, and uv protection, and a bit of scratch protection and restance to SOME solvents.

I have been disappointed with much new equipment I have bought, in that it seems the manufacturers do little or none of the prep work that has been discussed here. Especially die-cut components that are left with knife edges where the paint splits and lifts, and peels off in sheets. Dang, if they'd only wire wheeled the sharp edges so the paint would have half a chance... What will it take to get this done in Asia, Europe, and America. I have the same experience with new equipment from all three.

I bet I'm not the only one. I guess as long as the machines are shiny in the show room, and gotten out the door, what they do is good enough.

yep.. seen those punched and formed metal panes with chaff or edges on them like razors.. a few seconds with a grinder wouldn't hurt. that or some rubber moulding...

Just curious; Does anyone use clear coat over the paint, or just paint and wax it later?

What!?!?! No. I go get it dirty and scratch it up.

Keep scratching it often enough in the same place and you won't have to worry about rust.

I don't paint stuff to pretty it up so much as to keep the places that don't get scratched on a regular basis from rusting and taking the rest of the machine or tool with them.

no clear coat for me.. Once cured, I do wax it.

Clear coat is for aesthetics and is generally reserved for barn queens. You can get the same durability with almost any two part paint.

Don't forget Valspar Oil Base Metal Primer for increased durability.

when i was at tsc thought they had tractor/impliment primer and then a seperate oil based primer on the other side... oh well...

From what I read valspar is not compatible with a clear coat. also from what I was reading else where enamle != oil paints like valspar except on their restoration? line. which is part of the reason I was asking here

Actually, I think there might be qualitative environmental differences between Florida and coastal Washington State. I popped a bucket hyd line the first week I had my new tractor. After that, the water beaded up for a few days. Then the dirt stuck really solid. I cleaned my glasses and called it good. I've tried 16th gear at full throttle, but I can't get the bugs to stick at all.

i had a hyd line bust on a loader on my 1954 ford naa.. put about 3 gallons of fluid on me and the tractor in about 1/3rd a second.. that was 2-3 ys ago.

tractor still won't rust, and has wet looking areas in crevises of the engine.. and my dry skin problem sure cleared up for about a week.. shirt and pants iw as wearing made good rags for cleaning tools.. :)

Luckily enough my MF 135 and 2004 Ram are pretty close in color, so when I had a little base / clear left I took the skins off and sprayed them. I've been spraying vehicles on and off since my father started paying me $5 a car to wet sand and tape for him to spray. Painted my tractor two years ago, it is used in the woods, in manure piles and snow removal. Has chains rattled and branches brushed against the skins regularly, although expensive clear coat is hard to beat for durability.
