I have a 3x3 box frame ready to be tacked up to make a set of pallet forks. My father-in-law gave me a pair with the latches up top and hook on bottom.

I planned to mount an angle iron facing up to hang the top on (cutting some notches out to lock the forks in place) and another on bottom for the support and hook.

My questions is what size of angle iron should I use? I've seen others here that have used angle iron on their forks.

Would a 3x3x3/8" angle be strong enough?

I used 2x2x3/8 angle on mine. I think you need the 3/8 thickness for the hanger to sit right. I would think that 3 inch angle would just give it more leverage to break off. IMHO.

Kf,
I just finished with a set similar to what you are describing. I used 1/2" T-1 steel, had the notches cut and then used 1" solid bar stock to put it out enough for the forks to slide. You can see pictures of mine in the Customization forum under One Thing Leads to Another.

That's a nice build BayouMan. Way more than I'm capable of, but a very good example.

So you welded the 1" solid bar to the frame, and welded the fork hanger to that bar? I'm debating on the best way to do it. I'm bar an expert welder, nor do I have all the proper tools, but I'm wanting to build this bad.

The 3x3 I have is 3/16". Do you think that's heavy enough for the box frame?
