Tractor
TC40D
Well, I fixed one thing (hi-lo solenoid) and since I was under the tractor I decided to work on a few other broken things (many more to go). Such as the parking brake light does not come on. On the schematic for the TC40D I see "S.6" -- "PARK BRAKE SWITCH" which is suppose to light the bulb. Where on the tractor is this bugger? One would think it's by the parking brake pedal. The only swicth I see there is S.12--"CRUISE CONTROL BRAKE RELEASE SWITCH".

Fuses are all good, bulb is good.

While I have your attention, looking at the schematic I can decipher most of what is there except notations such as "C.31" which is in the S.6 box or "C.30" inside S.12 box. Any clues?

If you have someone who can help you, have them lift the parking brake handle while looking under the left platform. You will see a bar with a serrated (toothed) edge that moves to hold a flat bar welded to the side of the right brake pedal lever. That serrated piece is supposed to move into a switch as it moves to hold the brake in position. The switch it touches, or is supposed to touch, is the parking brake switch. It may have been removed or be way out of adjustment, but it is that switch that lights the parking brake light. As a matter of fact, you don't need to press on the brake to light the light, you only have to lift the handle to make the serrated bar engage the switch. Oh yes, you may also have another broken wire in that area or the switch is bad. It could also be a burned out lamp in your instrument panel. Don't rule out any possibility.

If the switch looks normal. Get into the seat and start your tractor. Set the brake and parking brake, then stand up. If the tractor keeps running and the light is OFF, the light is bad. If the tractor dies, then you know for sure it is the switch or maybe a relay or operator safety module. I'll have to check my schematic because I don't remember the circuit.

The "C" numbers you referenced are "Connector" numbers in the wiring harness, I believe.

Well, I see where a switch is suppose to be -- completely sheared off. Wire harness is there with connector but no boot. Called dealer and had a heart attack :shocked:when he said $28.80 plus tax.

So, anyone out there have a source for after market on this switch.

Part # 47132449 Parking brake switch.

Thanks,

Okay, I know it's expensive, but do you really think you'll find a replacement for less considering all the hassle you'll have making it fit? I recommend biting the bullet and paying for the switch. You'll just have to decide.:)

I came to that conclusion last night after an hour of looking around. One place had it for $23+$12 shipping. The dealer I use had it for th $28.80 price but they're a 2 hr. rnd. trip drive. I guess I'll combine that switch and my spring filter buying trip in one. The other way of looking at it is that it's only the parking brake light, why spend the $$s. But, I'm trying to "make it right" and get this machine put back together after yrs. of abuse taking timber (sold property, no longer cutting timber).

Well, after the great job you did on the rabbit/turtle solenoid, I'm sure not going to tell you that you can't come up with a good alternative, but remember the original switch was weather proof. . . not timber proof ;), but weather proof:D. Stuff like that is terribly expensive. I bought a simple relay for a Dodge Diesel pickup that was almost $100. I knew I was getting hosed, but I put it in and never had another problem with my truck starting. A similar relay on our tractors is the glow plug timer for around $68. I hate paying that much, but I've done it and so have lots of others because there's no easy way to get an alternative. As you said, since it is not a "have-to" item, it could just remain as it is until it is convenient to replace.

Make sure you call them 3-4 days before and have the switch waiting for you. If you don't, old Murphy will do his best to make sure another customer buys the very last switch in stock 15 minutes before you arrive.

I'm like you about making things right. I hate operating a tractor that has things wrong with it..even little stuff that does not really affect the opearation of the tractor such as your switch.
