Partnering On Hay Equipment - Small Acreage

Lol! I wasn't so hot on the idea to begin with but I thought I would at least ask :)

An answer for those who ask YOU if you want to do the partnership on equipment: "Would you go halves / thirds on a wife?"

My hay buddy for 30+ years and I are partners on a NH256 rake. It's worked out ok so for and I'm not expecting any problems. He has his own round baler and I have square. We usually help each other out.

Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations on the idea of partnering with neighbors on haying equipment for small acreage? Can this work well or is it a bad idea?

My neighbor is partners with a friend. The neighbor has the tractor (Kubota 4630) and a tandem disc. His partner has the grain drill for planting. This past season they put in 7 acres of forage mix. Yielded about 430 bales (3 twine, 100-120 lb) that they sold to one buyer for $12/bale. Their cost was seed, $130 for irrigation water (3 acre feet applied in Jan, Feb, March--the growing season is late Oct to early May) and diesel. No fertilizer was applied.

One of their high school buddies mowed the field with his NH self propelled swather and rounded up the bales with his NH bale stacker. A barter deal.

Another high school buddy used his hay squeeze to load the stacks onto the buyer's flat bed hay truck/trailer rig. Another barter deal.

It's nice to have friends in the business.

Good luck

Don't even think about it, one person always finishes up losing out.

I have an idea that might work for you, Runningm. Why not say something like this:

Hey, Jim. Either I'll buy the equipment, and I'll bale your hay for $ X/ bale along with mine, or you can buy the equipment and bale my hay for $ X/ bale along with yours.

That way you both get what you need, and one of you owns the equipment.

You buy the equipment and if it works in with your operation bale his hay for around the going rate.
