A long Time customer of mine told me yesterday that he was going to sell his bulldozer. It is a 1964 CAT D6. He Said it was a very reliable dozer but is very "manual" and lacks creature comforts of modern dozers. He said he has replaced or rebuilt most of the common wear and problem parts. He is asking $6500.
My buddy and I have land separated by only a dirt county road. Both if us would like to have access to a dozer for little projects. Neither of us have ever driven a dozer but we are fairly tractor/implement savvy.
1) is this a good price
2) is this a good idea
3) is this a money pit / nightmare / relationship killer
4) could repairs cost more than the thing is worth? Is it likely?
In discussing the possibility, we both considered how to deal with a break down , repair and parts replacement. For instance, what if I ran it one weekend and he ran it the next weekend and it broke down while he was running it, but because of something I actually did. In other words, who pays to fix an issue when it occurs (the one running it when it breaks down, or do you split the cost). Also, I can see issues arising because one of us is using it more than the other.
I considered that each of us would pay a "rent" based on how many hours we put on it. This could go into a general fund and could be used for repairs.
I would love to hear what you guys think about it. Thanks
