To the Readership:

I am desirous of information and opinions related to Payne's Forks Company's Debris Forks. It is my impression from using the TBN Search Engine that depending on the type of toothbar/bucket arrangement some of the Payne forks will fit over the the toothbar (not that this is a problem). I think the time is approaching that I should start moving my "Rabbitats". Thank you in advance for the posts :). Jay

I saw them in the Northern Tool Catalog and decided to build a pair of my own.

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/build-yourself/102060-forks-my-fel.html

A few things that I've learned is that three forks are all you need. I built mine with five and that was too many. I took out two and it works better. For a cheap, easy way to move allot of material, I think it's the best deal out there.

Mine are built from 2x4 steel tubing that's 3/8 thick and after using them allot, the steel is bending. I'll probably have to build another set, and if I do, I'm going to put the steel on it's edge this time. I also built the angle of the front tip wrong. It could have gone either way, and I went the wrong way. I should have had the tips up so they would slide on the dirt better. My way has them digging in too easily.

Thanks for the feedback; now you have me thinking  which can get dangerous . Jay :D

Jay,

I'm guilty of that dangerous thinking thing myself!! hahaha

One more thing that I forgot to mention on those forks that I made was that the fine thread bolts striped out in about a week. I cut them off and replaced them with some grade 8 inch and a quarter corse thread bolts that have really worked out allot better.

Eddie

Are you sure that's not 3/16" tube...I've never seen thicker than 1/4"...

edit: Just looked at your pics in the other thread. Looks like 1/4" to me...

Anyway, nice build!

I think it is kind of funny that the Payne's web site says that the forks add 2500 pounds of lift capacity to you bucket. (I don't think it works that way!)

It sure doesn't. One of the downsides of forks that mount to buckets is the reduction in capacity. But, these are typically used for brush. I use mine mostly for pallets.

N80 and bjcsc:

I did not accept the website's Sales & Marketing hype about adding 2500 pounds of lift capacity to my FEL. If anything adding more weight out in front of the bucket would reduce actual lift capacity and unbalance the tractor as well. It is my impression that in some sort of convoluted sales logic they were somehow equating volumetrics (i.e. light weight debris) with bucket size and the size bucket that could handle the volume of the debris. What I really need/want is a grapple, but this acquisition would be difficult to win the approval from the COMPTROLLER a.k.a. "She Who Must Be Obeyed " no matter how much how whining, grovelling, and kowtowing behaviors I presented Jay :(

Been there. Done that. Never seems to work.

But Jay, even though those forks look very handy, weren't they around $700? Can't you get grapples, or bucket grapples for not much more than that?

N80:

I am currently investigating the costs of the grapple option ;), and will be developing my "justifications" as I obtain more "factoids". Jay :)
