perkins A4-212 timing

Hi just wondering if anyone can help with perkins A4-212 engine timing ,have got tdc compression stroke,have taken idler gear off and lined up main lines, worry is do i set gear timing marks with motor at tdc or 22 degrees before tdc and on the injector pump wheel is a 1 and 2 mark which one do i go by,have also put air pressure into number one outlet of pump and turned until stop Cheers Ted

All those gears is very hard. To make a mark on those gears is near imposible . Remove idler and set your gears to the corresponding marks !

G'day Ted I can only see two lots of pop marks on the idler gear or is there another set not showing up in the pic? Does your engine have an adjustable drive on the pump gear or ist it done with slots on the pump? If it has the adjustable drive on the gear and you have not altered that then you should be right. Setting the front of the engine is nearly always done at TDC as you are doing cam timing as well as pump, pump advance is done at the pump.

Hi Jon thanks for that the pump is from Bepco and it has three bolts on front of pump and cutaway for cotter pin to slot in someone has put a lot of punch marks on the gears but i used the two straight lines on the idler gear and put the corresponding tooth in the middle but the pump wheel has a 1 dot 2 on it not sure which one to go by Cheers Ted
