Looking at a tractor that is mint condition other than a siezed perkins A4-318 engine.

I found a used one engine for $2200 but wasn't sure if it would be cheaper/better to just have it rebuilt by a professional. Anyone have any idea what the cost of a rebuild would be? I don't have specifics yet on why it is seized?

Turns out the tractor was running fine, guy was trying to resell it because he deals with buying and selling and ran it a little bit around his place to check it out. Then the next day went out to start it and it was locked up. They took the oil pan off and found a few metal pieces.

It cost me $1600 ($800 parts, $800 labor) to have the 25 hp 4-cylinder Hercules IXB3SL gas engine rebuilt for the 1951 Minneapolis Moline BF tractor that I'm restoring. That Perkins diesel is a lot larger than my Hercules and I'd suspect the parts for a complete rebuild would be considerably more expensive. My guess is that the $2.2K used engine is a better deal--assuming it's in good shape.

Good luck.

And then you have to make sure that there isn't something else wrong that may have caused the original seizure right?

That has always been my worry about rebuilding a motor. I've done a few gas that wasn't too bad, but I also have experience with what i'm doing and what to look for.

yea but if you can completly rebuild the orginal motor and but a new oil pump and water pump and tstat with machine work for less than 2200 dollars you are better than buying a used motor for 2200 imo

Before buying a used engine you should find out how much it will cost to turn the crank and dip the block and change the freeze plugs i believe you could have a completely rebuilt motor for around 2200 since the major over haul kit cost 800 the oil pump is 200 the water pump is 120 and the thermostat is 8 and the radiator hoses is 32 dollars for both so you are looking at 1160 plus shipping
