You're welcome. :)

The issue I see is to extend the mower with it on the ground you need to be moving ahead. While you can sometimes slide the mower sideways on the roller the relief valve built into the mower will generally open if you try and it won't extend. So you would be leaving an uncut area as you move forward, which may or may not be an issue depending on your situation.

Also, flail mowers don't cut while backing up. In fact Peruzzo says not to back up. They don't say whether that's because they don't cut well or if there is risk of damage to the frame (as leonz said in another thread, the manual is really bad). So if you need to back up to an obstacle you need to have the mower off the ground. If the situation requires it be extended that means lifting it while extended.

Finally, if you are doing really steep upward banks you need to carry the lower end of mower off the ground as you mow. This isn't as much of an issue because in that case the mower isn't actually hanging as far off to the side, so doesn't put as much sideways force on the tractor.

My Brush Bull can struggle to side shift if I'm not moving. Different mechinism entirely I assume, but not totally different physics. And it wont cut for squat in reverse. If i reverse over something i have to plan on going forward over the same area to cut anything.

On the ditch mower the cutting head is attached to a pair of swing arms that move it in and out, so the action is a bit different. On this one there is a relief valve on the side shift cylinder that is supposed to prevent damage if you try to swing it into an obstacle. But it also tends to open when trying to swing out while stopped, and even if raised if the unit is being pushed up too steep a hill.

After not getting much reassurance on my choice of the Elk Cross 1600 with the Mahindra 3616 gear from the replies, I took a different approach. (I am not knocking the replies, there is good info / advice there just not exactly what I was looking for.)

I noticed that powerscol considered the Peruzzos, but went with the Maschio 160SE. He shows his tractor to be a CT235 which I was not familiar with. I went to the tractordata.com website, found his tractor and developed an interesting comparison.

The Maschio weighs 926 lbs. and the Elk Cross 1600 weighs 860 lbs. I estimated that the CT235 with FEL and filled tires weighs in at about 3900 - 4000 lbs., when I load my tires, the 3616 with FEL will weigh about 3900 lbs. (may also add 250 lbs. of suitcase weights if front end is too light). The CT235 lifts 1508 lbs. at 24", the 3616 lifts 1720 lbs. at 24". The CT235 has 34 engine hp and 26.5 at the PTO. The 3616 numbers are 36 and 31 hp. You get the idea. By making this comparison, I have more confidence that my 3616 can handle the Elk Cross.

One thing that I did not quantify was that it appears that the CT235 has a lower ground clearance and I assume a lower center of gravity which is in its favor if the mower is lifted at extension or used for vertical trimming.

Comments? Factors that I am overlooking?

Re: Peruzzo Ditch Bank Mower on Mahindra 3616

Front end weights are directly or indirectly incompatible with a loader. Either they will hit or increase your front axle load when lifting heavy. You could add/remove them when you hitch or unhitch the loader. Or you could just grab a bucket full of whatever is heavy & loose nearby for front weight.
