I hope this doesn't get deleted

These folks just don't understand the issue, if they ever seen a flyblown sheep suffering or dying for that matter their views would be different I am sure. I have seen hundreds of blown sheep over the years and I can tell you it ant’s pretty. Mulesing reduces the incidents of flyblow enormously. If it were banned probably tens of thousands would die or suffer each and every year.

PETA protesters bare bums against mulesing

Half-naked, blood-covered PETA protesters have resumed their campaign against the wool industry outside the Australian embassy in the US capital, Washington.

PETA is again urging international retailers to boycott Australian wool as part of its campaign against the practice of mulesing, where some of the skin is removed from the sheep's backside to prevent flystrike.

PETA is also campaigning against the live export of sheep.

Organiser Christy Griffin says the PETA activists have not been shy about making their point.

"We had a group of activists who were nearly nude," she said.

"They had Australian flags painted on their butts, and they were covered in blood, and they were lined up outside the Australian embassy in Washington."

Ms Griffin says there were no arrests as PETA handed out leaflets to embassy workers and others passing by.

She says a deal PETA struck with the Australian Wool Growers Association to phase out mulesing was rejected by Australian Wool Innovation and Australian wool producers.

PETA is now urging its members to contact Prime Minister John Howard to lobby him to back the agreement.

I don't think the content would cause deletion, but verbatim insertion of copyrighted material can cause problems for the site.

Flies lay maggots In the fleece, the maggots in turn feast on the flesh this if left untreated turns infected and the sheep dies a slow and painful death.

PETA have not reported the truth for a start. To talk about running new or different breeds is fancifully, the Australian merinos has been developed over about 200 years to suit or climate and environment as well as produce an excellent fleece. There are somewhere around 100 million sheep in this country and they run in mobs of maybe a few hundred to 20,000. There are many farms (stations) where they run 1 sheep per 5 acres. If a station runs 20,000 sheep it can take a week or more to yard them. So understanding this one does not need any imagination to realise how impractical it is to yard sheep just crutch every time flies are a problem.
Mulesing is done when they are lambs, only weeks old, It is done at the same time they are tail docked and castrated, good operators use antiseptic hygiene practices and anti fly sprays at the time so infection from flies does not happen. Pictures are banded around by PETA and some other groups are either exaggerated or taken from a minority of cowboys in the act.

I don’t believe that it’s not that dissimilar to circumcision

Here in the US that is often refered to as a "hot spot" and is typically treated by shaving down the affected area, disinfecting it with hydrogen peroxide or similar solutions and keeping it clean and dry for a while. It affects many long hair dog breeds too. Often it is hard to detect before it gets to be very serious, especially on animals that are not house pets.

From what I've seen, they're pretty clueless about anything concerning animal welfare.

PETA, along with the other so called "animal rights groups" are basically money making cash cows with 90% operating costs that have yet to benifit any animal species out there.

They were just in the news lately for killing dogs that they were collecting money for the purpose of relocating to new homes. It cost too much money to relocate them, so they put them to sleep and dumped their bodies in a dumpster, where they were found. How many other dumpsters have been used for this?

The number one target for their money raising campaigns are single/widowed elderly women. Most of their actions are geared towards convincing them of the need for their support.

The sheep in your country are no concern for them, but the attention they recieve for their actions is a major part of their marketing strategy. Once they get on the news, they know they will recieve more money in the form of donations based on the information reported on. For those who donate their money to these "causes" the truth isn't important. It's all about emotions and gulibity.

Their picture or logo would be in the dictionary, if there were a single word that meant: "people who have more money and time than they know what to do with, and not enough to worry about".

I understand how you feel, but it's more a matter of being ignorant and naive than them being idiots. Sometimes too much formal education removes people from the realities of what really happens in the world. I call it Bambi sydrome. They have a pet and think all wild animals are the same. Wishful thinking, but not very useful in managing wildlife for their best long term interest.
