anyone know if a scope mount made for a weaver base will fit a picatiny base? I know the slot grooves are different. but for a scope base that merely clamps the sides.. will they fit?

Yes.

You have it correct. Profile of the rails is the same. Dimensions and spacing of recoil grooves is different between them. All Picatinny rails have identical recoil grooves as per Mil-Spec. Weaver rails don't have a spec for dimensions/spacing of grooves.

For just clamping on rings or anything else without concern for the recoil grooves they will be identical. Happy shooting!

thanks that was what I was thinking.

I know the mil spec base has those groves like that and there are lots of tactical mount 'tools' that need to click or locate those grooves as part of their mount.. thus something needing a pic base usually can't use a weaver base.. but I was hoping a simple set of scope rings made to clamp to a weaver base without regard to the grooves would work on a pic base. thanks for confirming that.

appreciate it.

What I have done on the few rifles I have with the pic rail is to make my rings so that if they are attached to the scope and sitting loose in the slots they are sitting in the slots in a manner where there will not be any forward back movement. I know that probably doesn't make any sense but the front ring would be against the rear side of the slot and the rear ring would be against the front side. Probably still doesn't make any sense but you are an engineer and can figure it out.

I have the P rail on my Ar 15 and while I wasn't worried about recoil of a .223 I was more worried about the mechanical motion of the works so I did them this way (Warne rings on this one). Also I have a P rail on my .243 that is set up for long range work and I have never had an issue, though I also pinned the mount to the action.
