I work at a truck shop full time. We have a 40 acre lot to clear. I have more experience with highway truck type salt spreaders than pickup truck receiver hitch mounted.

Do all need a special type of salt? Our salt does not work with the pickup spreader as it clogs horribly. Need to use stuff that is really tiny. Looks like BB size. 6 mm small.

I would like to make/ buy a 3 point spreader. Will they eat most anything you pour into it?

I wouldn't mine seeing some home made 3point spreaders, myself.:)

Oh I agree. The ones at tractor supply were reasonably priced. I think they would spread about anything. If I had to use any type of spreader I would build/ find used my own 3pt Mount

Most of the 3 point spreader lines have non-metallic hoppers but, you would need to rinse them out well after use with salt same as after spreading fertilizer.

What type of salt will they accept? They spread large seed so I figured they would be able to do large salt sized jobs

I read somewhere here, that you could use a "differential" (rear end) from a truck or car
and build one from that. Instead of turning the drive shaft, it would turn the spreader.
I'd like to see something like that built.

That is a really great idea!! I'm thinking of building one. I have lots of welding skill and friends to help me out

I'd like to have a spreader that can handle salt mixed with stone dust.
Salt is very expensive, mixing it with stone dust would be an ideal spreader for me.
